what is the need of dialing alpha character ? is it for routing ? I am assuming you not meant for entrying PIN, unlocking/locking  phone etc ... AFAIK its is not programmed in this way to dial-out alpha character.

Dial:N is not supported on Generation one Phone ie 7960/7940.

Dial URI (Dial:400) on 7960/40 does not work on the line button as SURL
CSCsy52327
Description
Symptom:

SURL when configured as Dial:N on line button does not work on 7960/40 phones. For TNP phones this works fine

7960/40 phones display error "Host Not Found"

Conditions:
Configure service Dial:N on the line button as SURL.

Workaround:

1) Dial URI works from services button
2) Configure Speed dial instead of Dial URI
