Cisco CallManager Upgrade Using Backup Import

I’m preparing to upgrade our Cisco CallManager environment from version 12.5 to 14.0 using the backup/import method. The backup is complete, and I’m now getting ready to rebuild the new CUCM 14 cluster by importing it.

My main question is whether I should anticipate any issues with phone registration due to Trust List or certificate-related concerns. In my lab testing with different clusters, I didn’t encounter any problems. Additionally, there will be no changes to IP addresses or DNS.

Would this be a potential issue, or should the phones register without any complications?

The CUCM backup can only be restored on the exact same version; it cannot be restored on a different version. If you’re attempting this, the process will not work.

I’m not sure if you’re trying the option of a fresh install with data export. If that’s the case, you can export the configuration to an SFTP using the command utils system upgrade dataexport initiate and then use it during the fresh install of CUCM. This approach should work for you.

If the new CUCM uses the same IP address and hostname, there won’t be any issues with the trust list.

However, if you’re using a different hostname and IP address for the target CUCM, you’ll need to perform Bulk Certificate Management so the phones can trust the new CUCM. Otherwise, you’ll need to clear the CTL on the phones to establish trust with the new CUCM.
