Cisco Unity Connection in High Availability mode as Active- Active

Hi All,

I would like to clarify few doubts related to Cisco Unity Connection in HA mode over the WAN

We know that Cisco Unity Connection8.5  works in a Active-Active mode unlike Cisco Unity in Active-Failover

Like to confirm the following points:

1. Cisco Unity Connection cluster comprises of - one PUBLISHER & one SUBSCRIBER

2. Should all Voicemail users get registered with Subscriber since all call processing task, HTTP & IMAP request should be handled by the Connection-SUBSCRIBER?If yes, why?

3. Connection-PUBLISHER is used to provide message store and database service to the Connection-SUBSCRIBER.

Does it mean, Connection-PUBLISHER acts as the main database, i.e Primary database sits in PUB and alocal copy resides in Connection-SUBSCRIBER, so incase if the PUBLISHER goes down, still SUBSCRIBER would still work?

Also,  if a new Voicemail user is to be added, can we add it to the Connection-SUBSCRIBER while the Connection-PUBLISHER is down?

4. Please correct if wrong,...............................

In  Unity Connection8.5, say the Connection- PUBLISHER server is at DC loaction and Connection-SUBSCRIBER is at DR location.

All users should get registered with Connection-SUBSCRIBER and incase Connection-SUBSCRIBER goes down, then all the users will get registered over the wan with Connection-PUBLISHER till the time the PUBLISHER comes bask online.

5. In Cisco Unity, if a new user/subscriber is added, a corresponding mailbox gets created in Exchange and the voicemails are also stored in Exchange.

However, with Cisco Unity Connection8.5, if a new voicemail user is to be added, where will the mailbox for this new users get created and where will the Voicemails get stored? Please explain....with example

Thanks in Advance

Sumit

1. Correct, 2 servers per cluster

2. First of all users do not register with one server or the other, the only VM load on the server would be active ports, so depending on the design you might prefer the Sub over Pub, this is controlled on CUCM side via SIP trunk order or Hunt List configuration depending on if SIP or SCCP is used. I always load balance equally between both servers.

3. Yes, if Pub goes down Subscriber provides all functionality for except you cannot make database changes, think about this working the same as CUCM

4. Again, users do not register to anything.  Ports do.

5. Mailbox is created locally on UCON in Informix database and replicated to Subscriber.

You may want to take a look at the following link regarding the cluster model and the roles:

https://supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-5963

At a high-level, the Publisher / Subscriber terminology refers to the database relationship between the two servers in a cluster.  The Publisher is the first server Unity Connection server that you install (see design guide for recommendations/reqirements on location, bandwidth, etc).  The servers also then have the notion of Primary and Secondary roles and this is explained pretty well in the link above.  In a cluster, the recommended scenario is:

Publisher - should handle majority of administration (e.g., CU Admin, etc) and client traffic (IMAP, HTTP/HTTPS).

Subscriber - should handle majority of call processing (SIP, SCCP, etc).  You can control how you route traffic to the servers from within CUCM.
