Hi everyone,
this might sound like a stupid thing, but is anyone else experiencing a noticable coil whine on 8811, 8841 or 8861 after an upgrade to firmware 12.0(1)SR1?
We did this upgrade yesterday in response to https://tools.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory/cisco-sa-20171115-ipp
Today, several reports from users came in complaining about noise made by their desk phones.
I looked at several 8811, 8841 and 8861 myself, and all had a noise, some less noticable, some more. It comes from the top leaft area, somewhere behind the speaker grille. On most phones it can only be heard when you hold the phone directly to you ear, but on some few it is very noticable in a quiet office.
I downgraded again to 11.7(1) and the noise is gone.
Does anyone have the same thing going on?

I suggest you open a case with Cisco TAC. You can also see if this only happen with a specific codec. Either way this needs to go to TAC

Likely the best choice.
Could it really be a codes issue? The noise is mainly noticable when the phones are idle.

Hi there,
I agree with my friend Deji (+5). TAC seems like your best option here. Perhaps this bug crept into the new code;

Nice one!
It really seems to be the issue from the bug report. The noise goes away when the brighness is set to 100%. I was not aware that the brightness is not set to 100% by default.

Hi All,
I had the exact same issue but on my 8861 phone (3PCC). Once I upgraded to the 11.3.1 MPP Firmware the issue went away. I just bought the phone last week.
I'm just writing this hear as my google search brought me here so I hope it helps the next person too.
