Configuring an E1 in Nairobi

Hi guys,

I am trying to configure an E1 PRI in Nairobi. TelKom Kenya has proved that the cable and Exchange is good by having an IP Pbx onsite. I am on a CM 7.1(5b)su4. The remote site is on a 3845 GW. The E1 PRI card is VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 - 2-Port RJ-48 Multiflex Trunk - T1/E1. The E1 is configured on 0/0/0. Does anyone have any experience in Nairobi or do you see an issue with my config. I have done atleast 60 E1s around the world and this is the first site I am having an issue thats dragging on. I do have a green light (CD) on the card when the cable is plugged in. Thank you in advance.

Then most likely cable is wrong, like using ethernet patch.

Start with "show controllers e1".

Then "show isdn status". Don't exclude telco mistake.

not sure what you mean? it does show the E1 is down. Mind you I have done quite a few T1s and E1s in my career. I am looking for someone who may have had the same issue in Nairobi and was able to fix it by either changing the model of the E1 card or config.

E1 down == telco problem. They will swear that is not is not, but that's the same everywhere.

Note: 75ohm termination is correct only if have you coax cable. Otherwise, leave default.

Not sure why you assume its router problem and not telco.

Controller DOWN could mean L1 issues, replace cable if you have not already tried it. Is the telco smartjack in good state, i.e. no errors, all lights green?

Have them perform loopback check on their equipment.

Hi, thanks for the replies. TelKom Kenya were able to prove right to the cable by placing an IP Pabx and bringing up the PRI and placing a call. This is what I have when I do the show commands:

E1 0/0/0 is down.

  Receiver has loss of signal.

Do you have coax, or UTP cable coming out of telco temination ?

You're set for 75ohm/unbalance/coax. That is the only variable for L1.

Note sometime after they prove it working, it breaks just after.

it's a UTP cable from the Telcom. I had 75 ohms out but the Telco asked me to add it. I took it off and same issue. thanks.

Then most likely cable is wrong, like using ethernet patch.

Is the isdn switch type correct?

Wrong swtich type doesn't cause controller down!

However, it is right.

I think you're correct. This could be a cable issue, eventhough it works on an IP Pabx the pins could be incorrect when it's plugged in. I will send the pin configs to the cablers. Thanks for your input
