Hi everyone,
I was reading about HSRP for CUBE and saw a new command I have never used: mode border element.
What really do?
After read some documentation still don't understand what additional service are activated.
Thanks in advance

Excellent question, I was looking for the an answer to that question a while a go as well.
I am guessing its a Cisco step towards, enforcing session licensing on CUBEs

Let's wait until Cisco publish more information about this topic.

"mode border-element" CLI is required to distinguish the functionality of the box as CUBE or CME.
The CLI is not a pre requisite for "allow-connections SIP-to-SIP".
Most of the basic sip-to-sip call flows will work without "mode border-element" CLI by configuring "allow-connection SIP-to-SIP" since those are common for both CUBE and CME.
The CUBE specific call flow require "mode border-element" configuration.
Please mark correct if helpful.

Hitesh

I asked this question in cisco live berlin 2016 and the guys told me that its used for licensing purpose. There is no technical restrictions related to this command.

I've also seen somewhere that 'mode border-element' enables 'show cube' commands.

So, we have a 4331 router now in "CUBE" mode. Is it that the device can only run in either
"border-element" mode or CME, not co-resident?
I ask as my remote location only has CUBE there and no call controll device for the video endpoints.
I'm thinking either add anoter router running CME for the 5 end-points or somehow run CME via CUBE if possible. Could use advice.
Thanks!

Hi,
Im just looking to this thread.
The answer is that "mode border-element" command is required for enabling some CUBE commands.
Also as mentioned, help to distinguish between the CUBE and CME traffic.
And finally, both CME and CUBE can be co-resident.

Hope this helps.

Ramon.
