CUBE what does "Maximum SIP Trunk Sessions" mean ?

Hello cummunity.

We where using Cisco 2921 in the past as standard Router model for our BRI/PRI connection for our locations in europe.

Now because of German Telekom and rest of Europe ;-) will skip ISDN and will use SIP we have to define new standard router model.

We already define that we need internal power and some amount of modules, but now we need to know what router model we have to use because of SIP connections.

I found following link for CUBE:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/unified-communications/unified-border-element/data-sheet-c78-729692.html?cachemode=refresh

We need do know what "Maximum SIP Trunk Sessions" means ?

Are this SIP calls over SIP Trunk coming from provider for example ?

What about RTP connections's ? Does this depend on the bandwith ?

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards

Christian

Hi Christian

Refer to below.

Link Summery:

Table 9-10 provides capacity examples for a few platforms. This table shows the maximum number of SIP trunk sessions, which corresponds to the maximum number of end-to-end PSTN SIP-SIP calls. It provides limits without media and signaling encryption and limits with RTP/SRTP interworking, where traffic is encrypted inside the corporate network and not encrypted for the connection to the SIP service provider. For information on other platforms and for more detailed, information including required amount of DRAM and flash memory, refer to the Cisco Unified Border Element Data Sheet and the Cisco Unified Border Element and Gatekeeper Ordering Guide, both available at

SIP sessions means SIP calls and/or more specifically audio. It's dependent upon the platform. Further, you would need to purchase RTU licenses for these sessions. PID being FL-CUBEE-X (X denotes the sessions) -

Hi JB,

just want to to confirm so this “maximum session sip trunk” is have a same meaning with concurrent call? So for example we have  20 concurrent call at the moment is that mean we use 20 session SIP trunk? Is my understanding correct?

thank you and warm regards.

This is old but I wonder if you got this answered? Because I have exactly the same question and am yet to get a clear answer

Both of the answers provided by the two Cisco employees answer the OP question IMHO.

Okay let me seek further clarification. With platform support below and assuming the provider allows 250 trunk sessions. Does it mean supported concurrent unencrypted calls will be 250 multiply by 15 which is 3,750 max?

Okay let me ask further clarification. From the details at: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/unified-communications/unified-border-element/data-sheet-c78-729692.html

Using the specification below:

Platform: 4431 ISR. RAM 8GB and max Call per seconds: 15, service provider max trunk session 250

Does it mean that max concurrent active unencrypted calls (both outgoing and incoming) will be 250x15 which is 3,750?

No. As per the table in the document you linked to the maximum number of sessions that the router model you ask about is 3000.

This number doesn’t matter how many sessions your service provider supports on your trunk.

In your case as the SP maximum sustains 250 sessions you’ll never even get close to the router’s maximum cap.

I understand I will never get close to the router maximum but I want to know how many concurrent calls my 250 trunk sessions can support because from my understanding 1 trunk session is not equal to a call?
Update:

This seem to provide some clarity to my question.

A session is a single audio or a video call across the CUBE, regardless of call legs.

https://community.cisco.com/t5/ip-telephony-and-phones/how-many-calls-handle-by-cube-gateway/m-p/3059983/highlight/true#M345677

With 250 calls on the SP trunk that will be the limit. One trunk session equals one call. However one call compromise of multiple call legs, at a minimum one inbound and one outbound. This has no relation to max trunks session. Max trunk sessions is the number of calls that the model can sustain.
