FXS lines not dialing out

We have a 3845 Router that we reconfigured for voice. Have phones in the building and they are able to dial any extension and dial outside.  The router is at one location and the CCM is at another location. When we hook a normal POTS phone to the FXS port it will call any extension but you can't call it back and it will not call outside the network.

Here is the Hardwar on it:

Jeremy,

School districts do tend to let contracts expire. Pity.  However, I wouldn't give up.  Get with your Cisco AE and see if they can cut you a deal to bring all your Cisco gear back under contract.

Removing the FXS ports from the trunk group should allow inbound/outbound calls to proceed normally.

Jeremy,

Two comments.  First, use a newer IOS.  12.3T is rather old and, if memory serves, not supported.  Since you have what looks like 1GB of DRAM, try using the latest 15.0(1)M release.

Second, I notice you've made, what I assume is the fxs ports, voice-port 2/0/0 part of the pots trunk group.   Why?  Are you planning on dialing out of that port?  The connection plar statement should auto-magically ring the phone if an inbound call for 5109 arrives.  Outbound, it should match one of your dial-peers directly.  Try removing it from the trunk group and see if that clears things up.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the fast response.  This is a older router.  It has been sitting around for a while.  The contract for it is no longer active.  This is a School District that doesn't have a lot of finances and they ask us to do things cheaply.  I recently took over this position of caring for the network here.  They have gone through two others in the past year and a half.

The router has the fxs ports as voice-port 1/0/0.  The fxo ports start at voice-port 2/0/0.

If I add a plar statement to the extension I want and take the ports out of trunk group you think that will fix it?

Here is what I did:

!

voice-port 1/0/0

connection plar 1598

description POTS Phone Line 210-353-1598

caller-id enable

!

voice-port 1/0/1

connection plar 1599

description POTS Phone Line 210-353-1599

caller-id enable

Tomorrow when the building opens up again we will double check.

Thanks.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the help.  I have not forgotten about you.  School starting and got real busy.  They ported over couple of other POTS lines and used those for the fire alarm.  But I am still interested in getting this working properly for next time and being able to save the cost at that building also.

I was able to get a hold of the latest IOS image and soon I will be able to finish this right and will let you know what happened.

Thanks again,

Jeremy

Hi there Steve, and others who were reading this.

Sorry been a while. Since they were functioning we had to move onto other high priority problems.  But we did come across a similar issue at another campus when they were trying to add a fax line without any phone jacks in the building.  We ran it through our network and after a lot of research and others with more good ideas also this is what we did to get the fx0 and fxs ports to work like we wanted:

Added a line to the "voice service voip"

     modem passthrough nse codec g711ulaw

Then we needed to put a translation on it:

voice translation-rule 1320

rule 1 /9221249/ /1320/

!

voice translation-profile Fax-Profile

translate called 1320

Then adjusted those ports like you suggested:

voice-port 0/2/1

connection plar 1320

description POTS Phone Line 210-922-1320

caller-id enable

!

voice-port 0/3/0

description POTS Phone Line 210-922-1320

caller-id enable

Also setup new dial peers for that line:

dial-peer voice 5 pots

destination-pattern 1320

port 0/3/0

forward-digits all

!

dial-peer voice 6 pots

translation-profile incoming Fax-Profile

incoming called-number 9221249

direct-inward-dial

Thanks for all those that helped with this.  Eventhough it is a different router I am sure the concepts will work just fine.
