We have CUCN 8.6 and have now moved to gmail enterprise.
I just need a way of sending vmail alerts, don't require single inbox or anything. From what I have read. I could do alerts but I need to configure a smart host. Apparently this cannot be the target gmail server, as unity is not a relay server. I need a on site SMTP server to do the relay for me. Is this correct?
If I upgrade to CUCN 9, there is HTML alerts, but again that points to needing a smart host being configured.

You can use Gmail as your SMTP server. A quick google search produced lots of websites on how to set it up. So GMail would be your smarthost in your case.
Here is one of the many results I found.

I apologize.
Gmail will allow you to use them as a smarthost SMTP relay, but they require authentication to do so. We do this for all our printers that email out scanned/faxed images.
Looking at the Unity Connection smarthost configuration, there is no option for authentication, so it requries a blind unautenticated relay, which gmail will not allow.
So yes, you are correct, Gmail is not a viable options for Unity Connection smarthost at this time.
