We need to upgrade CUCM in the Unified CCE (ICM 8.5.2, CVP 8.5.1). Current version is CUCM 7.0.2 and wants to upgrade CUCM 8.6.2 (both pub and sub). From the Unified CCE software compatibility matrix we have found that upgrade path is 7.0.2••>7.1.3••>8.6.2. Can you suggest us …

Muhammad,
Rob gives some excellent advice there. We recently did a 7.1.3 to 8.5 upgrade
7.1.3 was on MCS servers, the 8.5 had to go on virtuals servers (we put then on C-Class chassis)
But essential what we did (or should I say the partner we worked with) was take a DRS of the current system, build the new system on another set of MCS servers (you may need to get you Cisco partner to assist with licensing).
So built it to 7.1.3 first restored the DRS and then upgraded 7.1.3 to 8.5 on the MSC servers. Now when you do this the software will load bu the services wont start. Not an issue
We installed 8.5 on the C-Class chassis, took a DRS from the MCS servers with 8.5 on then and restored it on the virtual images (again you will need assistance from Cisco licensing)
And that was it. Just remember to restart all the services.
Prior to the actaully switching we also upgraded all the phones (over 4000) over a number of weeks prior to the upgrade switch to the latest versions of phone firmware and ensured this was installed on the new servers. Meant we didnt have 4000 phones trying to upgrade at once expecially when 3000 are over the WAN links
hope thisgive you an idea of how it can be achieved with little issue...Good planning and a good Cisco partner is key.
thanks
Paul

Hi Muhammad,
The upgrade from 7.1(3) to 8.6(2a) is a direct upgrade path as shown;
Check out Table 4:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/compat/ccmcompmatr1.pdf
The move from 7.1(3) to 8.6 does incorporate a new "Refresh" upgrade portion (see below)
You will have to determine what version you current servers will support this is the "master" list for Server support;
Supported Cisco Unified Communications Manager Releases by Server
If your current servers don't support CUCM they may support a "Bridge" upgrade;
Bridge Upgrade - just in case
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/cucos/8_6_1/cucos/iptpch7.html#wp1119088
Check out this great doc from Saurabh for the refresh upgrade notes for the final step to 8.6.
This Refresh Upgrade will also apply to your CUCM 8.6 final step;
And read great the attachments from Ryan
You will need to work with Cisco either directly via your SE, a Partner or
PUT (product upgrade tool) to secure the DVD's and pay for the proper licenses
that will enable the Software feature License for your new version.
www.cisco.com/upgrade
You may want to upgrade the current phone firmware ahead of time to match the CUCM 8.6
versions
Check Table 33 here.

Cheers!
