How to setup a 4 port FXO module on 2901

Justin Westover

I need some help getting my 4 port FXO module working on my 2901 router. I realize that I need to use the voice-port command to activate and configure the module but I don't know what port(s) the 4 port FXO modules is using. I performed a sh interfaces and searched through but all I see are my gigabit interfaces, not my FXO module?

show interface doesn't show voice ports

if you do "show run" do you see them in in your configuraiton?

you can do "show voice port summary"

if you can't find them, make sure your router detected the module with "show diag | inc VIC"

I assume you also have DSP modules installed inside the router for the these voice ports?

I believe they are installed, how can I check to make sure? I am pretty new with the voice gateways...

use the commands I posted above

I'm assuming this means that DSP is installed.

Perhaps I should reboot in order for the FXO card to be recognized?

Do you have VIC2-4FXO or VIC-4FXO? You need VIC2-4FXO to work in 2900. I don't see VIC in your "show diag" output, so I assume you got VIC-4FXO which won't work.

Always refer to this list before buying cards: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps10537/products_relevant_interfaces_and_modules.html

No, I do have the VIC2-4FXO module, so I know I have the right on at least. That's why I was saying that perhaps I just need to reboot the router in order for it to be recognized?

Yes, perhaps. Those slots are not OIR by the way, you must turn off the box before adding/removing cards.

Alright, then that is why I don't see them in my config.

So once I see the slots, I am trying to setup our Voice gateway to take 911 calls and send them out those POTs lines instead of over the WAN to our CUCM. Any recommendations there? Do I even need to setup a gateway in CUCM since this isn't going to be for SRST call fallover, just 911 local dialing? Sounds like I just create the dial peers and setup the voice-port right?

You will need to set up this 2901 as a voice gateway in CallManager if you want IP Phones in that site to use this gateway for any calling through FXO ports.

The easiest will be to set it up as an MGCP gateway. You will then see four FXO ports in the callmanager and can setup your route patterns, route lists, route groups to point to them. There's more to it of course. In this case, you will not have any dial-peer voice commands on the voice gateway. Dial-peer voice commands are necessary if you set up the gateway as H.323  or SIP and if you need failover to SRST.

This should help.

It's for older Callmanagers, but the configuration is very very similar.

Alright so I know how to create the gateway in CUCM and also the route group along with route route patterns. All of our current gateways are h323 and I would like to stick with that. What would I need to do on the voice gateway once I have configured those things on the call manager?

here's an example. it's as simple as it gets.
