Intermittent 'Dead Air" on Cisco Phones Connected via VPN Gateway

We have home office users that connect to their Cisco phones to our CUCM via our VPN gateway.  What could cause intermittent "dead air" on calls from one of these phones?  Not sure where to start troubleshooting.   They say that usually hanging up and initiating the call again, cures the symptom.

Check for latency ( packet drop ) on the link. continuous ping ( i.e. ping IP Address -t ) would tell you this.

Also keeping the Ping -t, ON always from the user PC to CUCM IP, does help maintain continuous data path over VPN & avoids such issues.
