You may want to do a manual upgrade of phone firmware before your CUCM upgrade for two reasons:

1 - You may be on an old version of firmware, and need to progress through the special 8.5.2S version.

2 - You may have a large phone estate. Upgrading the phone firmware before the CUCM upgrade can reduce outage time for your end users.

Hi

The CUCM upgrade contains appropriate firmware versions that are automatically deployed when you upgrade the system.

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for reply.I have noticed that we upgraded the call manager from 5 to 7 ,version for IP phone models  7941,7961 and 7970 are showing SCCP41.8-3-2S while in compatibility guide it shows 9-0-2-2SR1.Even though phones are working.

Why is it like this?

Hi Ross,

What u are trying to say it is best pratcie to upload the exact compatible versions of IP phones before upgrading the call manager  else we can upgrade the call manager first and if required, upgrade ip phone firmware later on

regds,

Whether it's best practise to do the phone firmware upgrade first or notdepends on your environment.

I have a large(ish) cluster, so I prefer to do the firmware upgrades before. But for a smal cluster, it probably isn't worth it.

Do check, though, whether you need to go through the 8.5.2 firmware version first. You appear to be running an old firmware rev (8.3.2S), so may not be able to upgrade to something more recent without going through this intermediate step first.
