IP Phones POE burnout with Cisco Catalys 2960-S

Hi All,

We changed our POE switch to now use a Cisco Catalys CISCO 2960-S  (48 Ethernet 10/100 PoE ports). Since then we noticed that we had to replace more often Nortel Avaya 1140E IP Phone which were all dead after a while.

Avaya 1140E IP Phone are POE Class 3 compatible with 6.0 W in normal operation (10.5 W maximum usage).

Does anybody experienced anything similar  ?

I suspect a power surge from the Cisco's POE switch. However I am not sure where to start with this issue.

Thanks & Regards

Nick

I've never seen this happen before.

If your phones can go up to 10.5w, have you set the ports to go no more than, say 11.0w?

you can see real power consumption on each port

Hi ,

You can run the commands to diagnose the problem

a. debug ilpower  powermanagement

b. debug ilpower port on which Avaya Phone is connected

Hi all,

Thank you for your feedback.

Finally it is possible that our telephone sets are simply getting old after 3-4 years. Therefore changing the switch is a pure coincidence to see the phones burning out.

I found two interresting article about Avaya 1140E IP phone dying after a few years:

Hi Nicolas,

You can approach Avaya if  boxes are covered under warranty or AMC since some sort of workaround/repair  is also mentioned in second link provided.
