MCS 7825-H3 upgrade to 8.6.2a - failed

Hi,

I have tried to upgrade MCS-7825H3 from 6.1.4 to 8.6.2a multiple times and failed. It gives different failure messages at times. The latest error says that "Unable to find a valid USB drive" and upgrade fails. I have attached a valid USB device (100 GB) as required. I have formated the USB HDD to NTFS, will this be okay or do I need to format it in some Linux?

Format it to NTFS that will solve your purpose.

Pre-Upgrade Tasks

Before you begin the upgrade, perform the following tasks:

•Before you begin the upgrade, back up your system. This is particularly important if you are upgrading software on HP7825H3 or HP7828H3 hardware as there is no option to revert to the previous version.

•If you are upgrading software on HP7825H3 or HP7828H3 hardware, ensure that you have a 16GB USB device available to migrate your data to the new system. For Unity Connection and Business Edition 5000, a 128GB external USB device is required.

I finally solved this riddle!!

In addition to being a powered USB drive (which many others have noted), my drive had to be formatted for ext3. ext2, FAT32, and unpartitioned did NOT work. It was only after I attached an ext3 powered USB drive that the upgrade would go. Seems like an easy and obvious thing to put in the documentation.

So, grab yourself an external drive with its own AC power adapter and plug it in. Then connect it to a Linux box or use a Linux Live CD and boot your favorite laptop or download a copy of gparted Live and boot your CD or... Anyway, you need to format the drive as ext3. Then connect it to your 7825-H3 (I used the USB port in the front) and start the upgrade.

Remember if the upgrade failed, Cisco says you need to reboot the machine before you attempt another upgrade.
