Message Waiting Indicator (MWI)

Hi,

We have a CUCM and a 3rd party Voice mail system. We have no issues with voice messages, however we want to enable the MWI indicator in the Cisco IP Phones.

From 3rd party voice mail system, we are sending SIP Notify command as "Messages-Waiting:yes" and CUCM also acknowledges with 200 OK.

However the MWI is not getting enabled. Is there any other option to enable or the command need to be changed ?

FYI: In the CUCM Service parameters, by default Light & prompt is enabled for Message Waiting indicator.

Can someone help me on this please.

Regards,

Prasana

Did you get a chance to have a look at the CUCM traces? As SIP being used and you have also mentioned that the SIP Notify message body containing Messages-Waiting:yes is being sent by the 3rd Party VM system.

So, CUCM should also send the same notify message to the phone with Messages-Waiting:yes so as to light up the notification.

As per the notify message above, message body contains "No" for the Messages-Waiting. Due to this MWI is not working.

I hope the CUCM IP address is 10.125.111.224 and IP Phone is 10.125.111.145. Correct me if I am wrong.

Hi Abhay,

May be you have seen the first SIP trace. You can see the other SIP Notify as below:

Hi Prasana

After going through the PCAP. the above message is from Phone to CUCM for different call id ie different Subscribe Notify call ID. Whenever MWI is required Notifier (ie phone) subscribes to the CUCM for message-summary event with a call-ID which will be used for all other notify message for this event. As we can see the latest message from CUCM(notifier) to phone (subscriber) is message-waiting: no. That could be the reason phone does not show MWI..

If you could provide CUCM logs where we can review notify coming from 3rd party and going to phone.

Regards

Hi Saurabh,

Thanks for the inputs. please advise how can i capture the CUCM logs ?

I can make one more test from 3rd party to send SIP Notify messsage to CUCM and send the wireshark capture. Will it be OK ?

Prasana

Hi Prasana

refer this doc

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/unified-communications/unified-communications-manager-callmanager/200787-How-to-Collect-Traces-for-CUCM-9-x-10-x.html

the process is same for 11.x

enable only sip traces.

And Wireshark capture won't solve the purpose as we have to look the behavior of CUCM wrt to MWI

make a call to Voice mail and then send MWI back. the trace should have this full call flow

Does the SIP Trunk Security Profile from VM allow out of dialog notify messages? Take a look at the Unity Connection SIP integration guide for comparison.

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/connection/10x/integration/guide/cucm_sip/cucintcucmsip/cucintcucmsip060.html#27455

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for your reply and as though there is no SIP Trunk between the CUCM and Voice Mail. We use SIP Extensions as Voice channel and through which the SIP commands are sent to CUCM.

Prasana

Extensions as in a 3rd Party SIP Phone and Directory Number? If yes, why are you doing a line-side integration instead of a trunk? I doubt CUCM will accept unsolicited notifies line-side for another DN. Also, using a 3rd-party SIP device will limit the number of concurrent calls.

Hi Jonathan,

It is the 3rd party vendor where using this approach of SIP Extensions instead of SIP Trunk. Since the SIP Notify command is acknowledged by CUCM, we are checking if there could be any other way of passing or dialing to MWI DN to enable the indicator for the required Extension Number.
