Hi Leo,

 

I cant seem to upgrade my 8941 to SIP.  Any suggestions?  it keeps saying invalid configuration file.  I have the files placed in the correct spot but it seems like the phone is unable to process it.  I have been banging my head trying to get this to work.

Nevermind I got it working.  I don't get why it worked this final time.  The only thing I did was change the actual file name.  I didn't even open it.

The only thing I did was change the actual file name.

That'll do.  The filename of the SEPmacaddress.cnf.xml must be the MAC address of the phone.  

 

By the way, during the December 2014, I was able to get a 9971 and a 8861 to join my Asterisk box.  Both are even running the latest 9.4(2) firmware (didn't try any other firmware).

Unfortunately I don't have any 8941 to play with.  

 

It took me about three hours to get the 8861to register with FreePBX.  The reason was because I've enabled fail2ban and the IP address of the 8961 got registered there.  Once I cleared that the phone went well. 

 

What logs can you see on the phone?  One of the things I saw was that the phone was downloading the SEPmacaddress.cnf.xml just fine but it just wasn't "populating" the CUCM field on the Information section.  

 

Would also help you immensely if you've enabled web and SSH.

Hello Leo,

 

sorry it took so long to get back. been super busy.  here I am yet again.  The phone has sip but I can not get it to register with the asterisk/freepbx box.  any suggestions.  I have the web and ssh enabled.  I can see the logs in the the web Interface but I cant get into the phone via ssh.  here is what I can see.

let me know what I can do on my end to provide more information.  On a side note i did get my 7960 and the 7975 working without a hitch.  I also have a 7906 working as well.

I wouldn't be surprised.  Someone's put TWO sets of authentication.  

 

The first set of authentication is taken from your SEPmacaddress.xml.cnf.  The SECOND set of authentication depends on what you're trying to do.  If you want to look at the logs ONLY then the username/password is "logs".  If you want to do some debugs then the username/password is "debug".  

On a side note i did get my 7960 and the 7975 working without a hitch.

7960 is easy.  7971/7975, however, is a different beast.  This is because the 7971 started using XML codes.   My suggestion is to get the SEPmacaddress.xml.cnf of the 7975 and use this as a "template" for the 8941.  Look out for the value of the 7975's <transportLayerProtocol>.  If your value is "2" then your Asterisk extension should have a have "TCP only" settings.  In some phones, <transportLayerProtol> should be set to "0" and Asterisk extension should be "UDP only" settings.   So you may need a few tries.  

 

Another thing to look at is:  Settings > Phone Information.  Make sure your Asterisk server IP address can be found in the "Active Server" line.  

 

Try this:  Settings > Administrator Settings > Status > Status Message.  Did the SEPmacaddress.cnf.xml file downloaded fine? Where there any error messages?

What firmware are you trying to use?  There's been a radical change to the way the phones behave with 9.X firmware.  If your phone is using 8.X firmware, then you'll need XMLDefault.cnf.xml.  With 9.X the phones will only require the SEPmacaddress.cnf.xml to determine what firmware to load.

Hi Leo,

 

sorry for again a delayed response.  I didn't get an email stating that you had responded.  I will try this.  I believe I did try this once before.  It just says error downloading file(s).  what I am going to try and do is download the file off the asterisk server for my 7975, rename it to SEP8941MACADDRESS.cnf.xml  and see if it will take it as is.  what I was wondering is there some kind of security certificate that is required with these newer cisco voip phones?  the 7945, 7906,  7975 and even the 7960's are super simple to get working.  I believe the phone does request both the Mac address file, and xml.  I put 9.2 firmware on the phone.  I think I tried looking for an older version as I had read the way the phone behaves is quite different then previous phones.  I am wide open to suggestions or other ideas.

I would get an 8.X firmware if I could.  but I did not see any on Ciscos website.

here is what I have found.  if I use a file from my 7945 or 7975 both files lock the phone up and require a power cycle.  If I use the one provided on this thread it processes it, but still says phone not registered.  It keeps asking for the ctl and TLV file.  in the 79xx phones I remember it asked for a ctl file but it didn't matter.  you could still get the phones online and use them.  I am running 9-3-4-17.  I have the loads file in there as well it is pulling that, but the phone just sits and spins.  the phone just stuck trying to get a valid config file.  I set the tftp to different one then my asterisk box.  it does say something about VPN not configured.  (That's a new one on me) it pulls the dialplan file okay as well.  I have a SIP Device account setup on the asterisk box and credentials are correct too.

Ok, this is a worry.  The phone should get the config file and if any of the lines are wrong the Status option will tell you.

Thanks For Responding Leo,

Okay, the phone just takes it, and keeps taking the same file over and over and over and over.  It shows the file name SEPMACADDRESSHERE.cnf.xml (TFTP)  I assume to say it found the file.  it does not say error with file, or couldn't download file.  it just keeps taking it over and over and over and over.  the phone doesn't power cycle or reboot.  just the wheel on the screen keeps spinning.  it does attempt to pull a ringtone file.  but I don't have the file.  I cant believe that would cause it to not register.  I am familiar with how the 7975, 7945, 7906, and 7970 work.  What else can I do my end to provide more information?  the phone does not indicate any type of error in the configuration file.
