Not enough DSP resources available to configure pri-group on controller E1

Dear Gurus,

I'm adding a second VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 card and was unable to config "pri-group timeslots 1-31" on the new controller. It complained "Not enough DSP resources available to configure pri-group on controller E1". That's weird because I had 3 x PVDM-2 64 plugged in the C3825 router. Would be really appreciate your help. Thanks!!

Bearer channels and transcoders consume resourced based on the codec complexity:

g711u/g711a = 15 MIPS per call
g729a/g729ab = 30 MIPS per call
g729/g729b = 40 MIPS per call

Conference bridge calls consume 120 MIPS per call, regardless of the complexity.

PVDM2-16 is one DSP chip (32=2, 48=3, 64=4)

PVDM2-16 - Signaling
++ 8 calls per DSP (medium complexity codecs)
++ 6 calls per DSP (high complexity codecs)
++ 240 Credits (MIPS) in flex mode
  ---> G711 uses 15 MIPS per call (240 / 16 = 16 calls per DSP)
  ---> G729a/G729ab uses 30 MIPS per call
  ---> G729b/G729 uses 40 MIPS per call

Random Fact: Once you have a DSP allocated for a conference bridge you can't have that DSP for anything else. ie.
if you use a PVDM-32 we have 2 DSP here. Now. If you configure a 1 Session Conference bridge(120 MIPS) , we will only have 240 credits LEFT. So its always advisable to configure 2 sessions of CFB on a DSP(PVDM-16). So that we don't waste DSP resources.

Just do configure each profile (CFB,Xcoder,MTP) and see for yourself how many MIPS are being used and all

Hi Nixon,

It is quite possible that the DSP's are being used for other purposes like transcoding, hardware conference etc. If possible post a 'show run' of your gateway. Sometimes the dspfarm profile is enabled for lots of unnecessary codecs and so the DSP resources are reserved for those codecs as well and hence may not be available for the 3rd T1/E1 card.

Hi guys,

Here is my inventory for voice on routers.

HQ:
VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 (1st E1 for voice circuit; 2nd E1 for Frame Relay circuit).
PVDM2-16 x 2

BR1:
VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 (1st E1 for voice circuit; 2nd E1 for Frame Relay circuit).
PVDM2-16 x 2

BR2:
VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 (1st E1 for voice circuit; 2nd E1 for Frame Relay circuit).
PVDM2-16 x 2

PSTN:
VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 (1st E1 for voice circuit; 2nd E1 for Frame Relay circuit to HQ).
VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 (1st E1 for voice circuit; 2nd E1 for Frame Relay circuit to BR1).
VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 (1st E1 for voice circuit; 2nd E1 for Frame Relay circuit to BR2).
PVDM2-16 x 2

When I configure E1 voice circuit to HQ everything is fine. As soon as I configure E1 voice circuit to BR1 I get this error when try to configure full pri-group timeslots on PSTN router.

% Not enough DSP resources available to configure pri-group on controller E1 0/1/0
% The remaining dsp resources are enough for 2 time slots.
% For current codec complexity, 2 extra dsp(s) are required to create this voice port.

It seems that PVDM2-16 x 2 is not enough on PSTN router. Could you please give an advice if PVDM2-32 x 2 or PVDM2-62 x 2 would resolve this issue.

Thank you.

Do a "sh voice dsp group all"

This will show you how many MIPS are being used and how many in total you have

G711 - 15 per channel

G279 30 per channel

Bearer channels and transcoders consume resourced based on the codec complexity:

g711u/g711a = 15 MIPS per call
g729a/g729ab = 30 MIPS per call
g729/g729b = 40 MIPS per call

Conference bridge calls consume 120 MIPS per call, regardless of the complexity.

++ 8 calls per DSP (medium complexity codecs)
++ 6 calls per DSP (high complexity codecs)
++ 240 Credits (MIPS) in flex mode
  ---> G711 uses 15 MIPS per call (240 / 16 = 16 calls per DSP)
  ---> G729a/G729ab uses 30 MIPS per call
  ---> G729b/G729 uses 40 MIPS per call

Do you have any DSP profiles?

try "show dspfarm profile" and post the result,

You may be using dsps for something else.

Hi,

To resolve this issue, calculate the number of DSPs consumed by the current configuration (E1, Foreign Exchange Office (FXO), Foreign Exchange Service (FXS)) on the Cisco 3825 Series router with the DSP Calculator

. A fully loaded e1 consumes 31 channels. One channel each is consumed for FXO and FXS configurations. Determine the number of DSPs free to be configured for a new E1 connection.

If the existing configuration consumes the available DSPs, either delete the unused existing configuration or purchase more DSPs for the 3825 Series router (from the list of supported PVDMs).
