Precautions before power shutdown activity

There is a power shutdown activity going to happen end of this month in the data center.  My applications are running on ESXi (includes CUCM, CUCXN, UCCX). 

Though the activity will be done off business hours. Do I need to take any extra measures? Will my applications run as it is once the UCS is powered back?

Assuming you do a proper shutdown of the apps beforehand, you should have no problems.

Whether the apps start when they plug back the UCS and start ESXi, that's up to your ESXi config, it can be automated, or you'll have to do it manually.

So this is what i am going to do.

1) Shutdown all the applications.

2) Shutdown UCS from CIMC.

3) remove the power cable from UCS. Do the cleaning activity in the rack. 

4) Plug back the power cable to UCS. Then UCS will automatically powers up.

5) Manually turn on all the virtual apps from ESXi.

Does this sounds good? Correct me if I am wrong.

The sequence is absolutely correct. Once you power up the Virtual Machines, do not forget to check the DB replication using below command:

utils dbreplication runtimestate

Issue "utils system shutdown" on all appliance virtual machines to gracefully shut them down, once they are all powered down you can shut down the UCS servers either from ESXi or CIMC.

This is correct, unless the ESXi is configured to automatically restart virtual machines (recommended) in which case step 5 can be skipped.

Is that possible ESXi that will shutdown CUCM vm instead of I manually shutdown using CLI?

The scenario will be like these

1. When UPS battery left 30min, it will instruct ESXi to shutdown

2. ESXi will shutdown all its VMs based on order

Once ESXi will be shutdown, all the VMs will automatically get shutdown. However, this is not recommended and you should go for a proper shutdown through CLI as it can impact the file system if a clean shutdown is not performed.

Imagine if power down in the middle of the night.

None in the office

The only power source is UPS.

ESXi can clean shutdown every vm that has vmware tools.

It seems CUCM is not.

Alternatively is to instruct ESXi to run a script that will ssh to CUCM as admin and issue 

"utils system shutdown"

Anyone ever try that method?
