Hi everybody.
Please consider the following example:
Let say we have CM group called AZ group.
This group has following CM in the order listed below:
CM1 199.199.199.1
CM2 199.199.199.2
CM3 199.199.199.3
Let suppose we want to turn on auto-registration for our phones.
Based on a video lecture, that is what we do:
1) Select a CM from our cluster which will handle our directory number etc . We do that by going to CM admin-> Cisco unified CM and select one CM from the list. Let suppose we slect CM3 199.199.199.3, we enable auto-registration on CM3 as well.
2) We specify the Cisco unified CM group used for auto-registration. We select AZ group which lists three CM as:
CM1 199.199.199.1
CM2 199.199.199.2
CM3 199.199.199.3
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Let say we power up our ip phone. The phone contacts thte tftp and get the default configuration file.
1)How does phone know it has to contact Cm1? ( which we have selected for auto registratio in first step)
At this point the phone contacts CM1 which assigns it a directory number.
With which CM does the phone register? ? Will it register with cm1 because we already selected cm1 for auto registration? Or will it look at Cisco CM group specified for auto registration which is AZ group and contact the first CM listed there and register with it?

The phone will download the config file from the TFTP which will include all CM servers if that is what the device pool--> CM group assigned to device default includes.

Hi Chris
We want to turnon auto register our 7940 phones.
We have three CM : CM1,CM2, CM3
We also have a device pool LEE which uses CM group called AZ group which lists CM as:
CM1
CM2
CM3
That is what i do:
I go to CM admin--> Cisco unifiedCM--> select Cm3 and set DN range( it enables Cm3 to handle auto registration)
Next I go to device default and select device pool Lee.
Please note that device pool Lee is using CM group AZ which list :
CM1 1.1.1.1
CM2 2.2.2.2
CM3. 3.3.3.3
Now we connect our Ip phone and our phone boots up. Our phone request
XMLDefault.cnf.xm file.
Will this file contain CM 1.1.1.1,2.2.2.2,3.3.3.3 addresses or will it contain only CM3 3.3.3.3 address because CM3 is the one chosen to hand out DN?
I am going on my hunch here.
XMLDefault.cnf.xm file list three Cm: Cm1 1.1.1.1, 2.2.2.2, 3.3.3.3 because we are using device pool Lee, CM group AZ under device default .
our phone contacts Cm1 1.1.1.1 first because it is listed first . but since it is CM3 3.3.3.3 which is enabled for auto registration, Cm1 will not respond. Same case with Cm2. Finally our phone contacts Cm3 which responds because we enabled auto registration on it.
Am I correct ?
