Shared line configuration

Hello everyone,

we have CUCM v. 9.1.1.20000-5 and we are trying to achive the following configuration for a small subset of IP Phones (let's say 3):

a) Incoming calls can make Phone 1 ring or all three phones ring together (like a shared line), both solutions are fine

b) Once a call has been answered, say from Phone 1, it must be possible to forward it to another phone, say Phone 2

c) outgoing calls from the three phones must bring a unique caller ID, say the one of Phone 1

We thought we could accomplish this by using just one shared line, say extension 4444, so that all phone would ring when the extension is called and all outgoing calls would have 4444 as caller ID. But we have a problem with point b), since we do not know how to forward a call to another phone with the same extension (busy sound)

Could you please advice?

Thanks.

Andrea

Hi Andrea.

You have two ways to satisfy all requirements

1) You can use first line of all phones as shared line so that all phones can ring simultaneously on an incoming call and can have the same caller id for outgoing calls

Than you can create a second line with different DN to forward calls between users.

2) You can have three different DN on those three phones so that the first user that receives the call and can forward calls to other two users. To have the same external caller id , you can configure the same "External Phone Number Mask" on all three extensions of three phones , and flag "Use Calling party's External phone number mask" on Route Pattern configuration.

Hi Andrea,

Are you talking about forwarding or transfer to another extension. Call forwarding settings would come into play when the call is not answered. Once it has been answered you will need to transfer / forward it manually to another extension.Forwarding to same extension would be possible only if they are in diff partitions and CSS on phones is configured in a way that they are able to reach only the intended partition. Like 4444 in PT-A with CSS-A can have access to 4444 in PT-B by putting PT-B in CSS-A. However, CSS-A should not have access to 4444 in PT-C. You can try it and see if it helps.

Hi Manish,

thanks for your answer. We are talking about transferring once the call is answered.

In your opinion, is it possible to transfer a call to a different phone with same extension in a shared line configuration (three phones, same extension)?

If we try, we get the busy sound but maybe there is a way to address a specific phone?

The other solution we were trying is to give three different extensions to the three phones. In this way incoming calls from the external arriving at phone A can be easily transferred to the other (different) extensions. We have a problem with point c), because we don't know if is it possible for calls made by extension B and C to bring the caller ID of extension A (outgoing calls should have same caller ID, e.g. the one assigned to phone A).

Hi Andrea,

For your second scenario:

The other solution we were trying is to give three different extensions to the three phones. In this way incoming calls from the external arriving at phone A can be easily transferred to the other (different) extensions. We have a problem with point c), because we don't know if is it possible for calls made by extension B and C to bring the caller ID of extension A (outgoing calls should have same caller ID, e.g. the one assigned to phone A).

For point C you can set the same "External Phone number Mask" on the Directory number configuration page of these 3 extensions on cucm like 2324443533. So when any of these 3 extensions make an outbound call they will show the caller id as 2324443533.

Hi Carlo,

solution one looks fine. Do you know if we can create a second line on Cisco IP Phone model 3905?

Thanks.

Andrea

Found out myself: it can be done. Thanks for your help!

Curious why a hunt group was not just used?

Add all the users to a hunt group.

Create a Route point for every inbound translation pattern.

Forward each CTI route point extension to the Hunt Group extension.

Your users will see the ASCII Alerting Name of the first point that the translation pattern sends it to.

The hunt items can be found under Call Routing - > Route/Hunt at bottom of list.

For pointC, you've one other option as well as a side note. On device page, you can apply desired calling party transformation mask to 'Caller Id For Calls From This Phone' and can modify the caller-id to any desired value. Certainly, you can then keep the same caller id for all three phones even for internal calls. Just take care to route the call appropriately when someone calls back on that number.

mmm... we have flagged the option "

You're right. You need to create calling party transformation, keep it in partition and then assign relevant CSS there.

Beauty of CUCM is you always have more than option to achieve the same requirement and you get it one which suits most in your scenario :)

- Vivek

Yes Vivek. +5

Not only on CUCM...

on VG configuration you could define a dialpeer matching calling number with answer-address keyword and applying a translation-profile:))))

It's the beuty of Cisco UC

:D

Cheers
