Show ISDN status shows : Layer 1 Status: DEACTIVATED

TrickTrick

Hello,

I'm trying to setup a digital line connected to one BRI interface, but the link between my voice gateway and telco equipment doesn't seem to be ACTIVE by issuing the commend "show isdn status"
The configuration in the BRI interface :
interface BRI0/2/0:0
no ip address
isdn switch-type basic-net3
isdn point-to-point-setup
isdn incoming-voice voice

trunkgroup Groupe1

tried different things without success based on this https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/dial-access/integrated-services-digital-networks-isdn-channel-associated-signaling-cas/5706-bri-layer1.html#deactivated  : Shut  / no shut ;  no backup command is added

Didn't try to make a call yet thinking the status should be activated, the only thing i didn't try yet is isdn tei-negotiation first-call

what's the solution guys in such situation  ?

Thank you

anyone ?

1) Make sure you are using the proper Color code for the cable, Google for the T1/E1 CrossOver Cable or BRI Cable Codes.

Thanks,

Hello Haris
If I'm not mistaking.. the needed cable here is the the straight one.. I've already checked this.. btw when i connect it to an converter équipement... analog phone rings.. i think no issue regarding the cable at least this is how it always worked with me

By googling this i found other configurations like the one in the attachments (middle one). any idea why ?

Hi,

I would suggest that you check the cabling once again.

Ensure the pin out is as it should be for a BRI cable.

You can reach out to provider in case you need help in verifying the cabling.

Apart from that, check if you see any LED activity on the BRI port.

You can also try adding these commands, if not already done:

isdn send-alerting
isdn sending-complete
isdn static-tei 0

Hello bichacko
The needed cable is the straight one right as far as i know.. it's the one used here

I'll try to add these commands.. can you just confirm if the OK LED should be enlightened if the cable is good before making any calls or anything ?
Adding the commands can make the OK LED ON ? Or i can test calls even if the LED is off ?

Thank you

Yes, when you connect the cable the LED status should turn green:

LED
Description
B1

Call active on B1 channel when LED is solid green.

B2

Call active on B2 channel when LED is solid green.

OK

ISDN Layer1 is activated when the LED is solid green.

Br,

Thank you for your information
I managed to get the layer 1 UP by connecting an equipment between the telco and my VG, but cannot process any call unfortunately, can't get the leyer 3 now up...
I added the Voicegateway in the call manager ( H323)
created a translation pattern where XXXX will be translated to one of the internal extensions

when I place a call from my cell phone I have this : ISDN BR0/1/0:0 SERROR: L2_Go: at bailout DLCB is NULL
L2: sapi 0 tei 65 ces 255 ev 0x1..
no call is received internally
What can I check in the Call manager or the VG?

Hi,
I have managed to make it work somehow ( long story)

now the problem is , I have 2 BRI ports connected (same number), an incoming calls make both BRI ports send signaling and RTP, in the user phone i see ( two incoming calls), after 5 seconds both calls get canceled
I unplugged 1 cable from 1 port and the call is processed as it should be
tried to use different algorithms in the trunk group, nothing helped

what do you think ?

What is the status for show isdn status?
Also, what is the output of Show interface BRI0/2/0:0
Another simple check - are there link lights on the physical port?

I only have one BRI site, and this is all I have for the BRI card. Make sure the voice port is configured as well

interface BRI0/2/0:0
isdn switch-type basic-net3
isdn point-to-point-setup
isdn incoming-voice voice
isdn send-alerting
isdn sending-complete
isdn static-tei 0
trunk-group BRI 3

voice-port 0/2/0
compand-type a-law
cptone ES
bearer-cap Speech

hello Mike, thanks for your input
most of the commands you have mentioned are already there, here is the outputs :
====SHOW ISDN STATUS=====
ISDN BRI0/1/0:0 interface
dsl 0, interface ISDN Switchtype = basic-net3
Layer 1 Status:
ACTIVE
Layer 2 Status:
TEI = 0, Ces = 1, SAPI = 0, State = TEI_ASSIGNED
Layer 3 Status:
0 Active Layer 3 Call(s)
Active dsl 0 CCBs = 0

=======SHOW INTERFACE BRI 0/1/0:0=======
BRI0/1/0:0 is up, line protocol is up (spoofing)
Hardware is NIM-4BRI-NT/TE
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 64 Kbit/sec, DLY 20000 usec,
reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
Encapsulation VOICE, loopback not set
Keepalive set (10 sec)
Last input 00:02:03, output 00:02:22, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters never
Input queue: 0/375/0/0 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0
Queueing strategy: fifo
Output queue: 0/40 (size/max)
5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
0 packets input, 0 bytes, 0 no buffer
Received 0 broadcasts (0 IP multicasts)
0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles
0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored, 0 abort
0 packets output, 0 bytes, 0 underruns
0 output errors, 0 collisions, 8 interface resets
0 unknown protocol drops
0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out
3 carrier transitions

the first two leds are ON ( EN and OK; B1 and B2 are not)

The strange thing, when I enable debug isdn errors, I have this repeated line :
ISDN BR0/1/0:0 SERROR: L2_Go: at bailout DLCB is NULL
L2: sapi 0 tei 65 ces 255 ev 0x1

Layer 1 seems ok now, but layer 2 does not.
Can you enable layer 2 debug
debug isdq q921

The Layer 2 status - TEI = 0, Ces = 1, SAPI = 0, State = TEI_ASSIGNED - should show Multiple Frames Established. Its possible telco is not responding to your SABME message possible from a simple misconfig.

When I enable it , and make a call nothing happens ... no debug messages are displayed ... except for this : May 8 14:09:17.676: %ISDN-6-LAYER2UP: Layer 2 for Interface BR0/1/0:0, TEI 0 changed to up which appears even when disabled

So this can mean that my side is configured correctly ? for layer 1 is OK, layer 2 can be their problem ? what about the voice-port config; there's some commands that depend on the country like the cptone for example

The funny thing is, when I do shut no shut or change the switch-type, it becomes TEI = 0, Ces = 1, SAPI = 0, State = MULTIPLE_FRAME_ESTABLISHED, seconds after, it goes back to TEI = 0, Ces = 1, SAPI = 0, State = TEI_ASSIGNED

tried to enable another debug and I see : *May 8 14:28:30.476: ISDN BR0/1/0:0 CDAPI: cdapi_mib_update msg CALL_DISC, remote number , connected? No

this can reveal something ?

Did you add this lie at all:
isdn static-tei 0

its optional, but for my BRI (in Spain), i needed to set this identifier to 0 for layer 2 to come up.
