Time Synchronization issue on CUCM with NTP Server (Cisco Router)

Hello Experts,

We need your suggestion to configure Cisco 3800 Router as NTP Server and Syn with Cisco Call Manager to show correct time order on Cisco IP Phones.

There was a NTP Server before which is remove now but IP Phones are showing 30 min off from the Actual time.

We did Cisco 3800 as NTP server and added in CUCM as NTP Server but still time is showing different on Cisco IP Phones.

Please assist.

Thanks,

Hello,

CUCM Version: 6.1 and IP Phones are:

  • Cisco 7940
  • Cisco 7941
  • Cisco 7942
  • Cisco 7970
  • Cisco 7971
  • Cisco 7975
  • Cisco 7906
  • Cisco 7937

Further the Day/Time group we will reset in O/S mode? in Line Properties?

Hi Amin,

diagnostic test shows NTP is failed.

test - ntp_stratum         : Failed

The reference NTP server is a stratum 12 clock.

NTP servers with startum 5 or worse clocks are deemed unreliable.

Please consider using an NTP server with better startum level.

do u have any other NTP server in setup ?

regds,

aman

Hello Aman,

We dont have other server. We configure Cisco router as NTP Server. Please see the config below:

VG-Router#sh run | s ntp

ntp source GigabitEthernet0/0

ntp master 1

ntp update-calendar

----------------------------------------------------------------

VG-Router#sh clo

VG-Router#sh clock

11:46:32.603 GMT+3 Thu Nov 28 2013

How we can define different startum level on CUCM?

Hi Amin,

Just try entering the command ntp master and check show ntp associations detail.

Hello Aman,

Greate This I already define on Cisco Gateway.

VG-Router#sh run | s ntp

ntp source GigabitEthernet0/0

ntp master 1

ntp update-calendar

Further we need to match Stratum with CM so either we update the Stratum on CM to match with NTP Server (router)

or either on NTP Server (Router).

What will be best praticse to update on router or CM?

Thanks,

Hi Amin,

I do not think there is any way to change stratum on Cisco Call manager.

can u share show ntp associations detail on router ?

you can refer the link

Its pretty strange , i try to emulate same issue on lab with cucm 7 and cipc . its stuck. cipc time is not getting updated even after restarting node. its picking up time locally but not from cucm or ntp reference. are we missing something or is this some kind of bug?

Hi Amin,

Just a thought :

NTP master clock not able to synchronize

CSCth87350

Symptom:

NTP master clock not able to synchronize

Condition

issue is seen in 3845 routers.platfrom depended.

Workaround:

There is no known workaround

Known Affected Releases:

12.3(11)T8

what is the exact IOS version and model of 3800 series router u are using?

regds,

aman

Hello Aman,

Here is out put for the NTP Associate on the Router. I am afraid that the IP showing in below output is not showing correct one.

------------------------------------------------

VG-router#show ntp associations

address         ref clock       st   when   poll reach  delay  offset   disp

*~127.127.1.1     .LOCL.           0     11     16   377  0.000   0.000  0.232

* sys.peer, # selected, + candidate, - outlyer, x falseticker, ~ configured

I did below setting on the Cisco Router to become NTP Server.

VG-Router#sh run | s ntp

ntp source GigabitEthernet0/0

ntp master 1

ntp update-calendar

--------------------

VG-Router#sh clock

11:46:32.603 GMT+3 Thu Nov 28 2013

and ip for the inside Gigabit interface is 172.16.7.2 but the above output is not showing the IP in NTP Association.

Further the Model for Router is 3825 and IOS is :

" 2800 Software (C2800NM-ADVENTERPRISEK9_IVS_LI-M), Version 15.1(4)M5, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)"

Thanks,

Jehan

Hi Amin,

Could not understand why this is happening?

further , the model u are mentioning is 3825 but snapshot is for 2800.

regds,

aman

Hi,

I have no idea that why the router is not showing correct detail in Sh NTP assocation command.

Router is not remote location i dont have direct access. I did show version to see the IOS. Which command can tell us the router model?

Hi Amin,

u can use the show version, show inventory and show diag command .

what I suggest is open discussion in Router section?

regds,

aman

Hello Aman,

Ok I  will check with Routing Team.... But let assume if we make Call Manager as NTP server so IP Phones can

get the time from Call Manager it self. Than what are the core steps to configure it.

Let try to make Call manager as NTP Server. In below NTP Ref will give Call Manager Publisher IP Address?

Further Select here the NTP Reference.

Thanks,

Jehan

Hi Amin,

I do not think u can make call manager as NTP server.

It can act as NTP client. If anybody has an idea, please let us know.

Hello Aman,

Ok...but is there any other way that IP Phones Syn with the Call Manager Clock? Becuase there is Clock setting on the Call Manager. So if the IP Phoens Syn with Call Manager Time Clock that its also fine and acceptable.

Thanks,

Jehan
