Translation patterns are used for modifying the calling/called party number based on the dialed number. This is done before a destination is selected, meaning calls route through translation patterns to modify the calling/called number before reaching a route pattern which points to a gateway or an end device such as a phone. Transformation patterns are modifying the calling/called party number once an endpoint or destination has been selected. Transformation patterns are used to change the calling/called party number right before a call is sent out of a gateway or trunk, or can be used to change the displayed number on a phone when a call is received.
