Unable to place call on calls on hold - SIP Trunk from CUCM to CUBE and from CUBE to ISTP

Hi Cisco Community,

I have a SIP Trunk setup between the CUCM and CUBE and another SIP Dial Peers from the CUBE to the ITSP. All incoming/outgoing calls, DTMF-Relay works well except one thing which is the ability to hold the call.

On the SIP Trunk from the CUCM to the CUBE, I did not select “MTP” because when I do so, I am forced to select my preferred MTP codec which when selected G.729/G.729a, all my outgoing calls goes out using G.729r8. This codec works well for most of the calls until the ITSP replies back with G.729br8. When this condition occur, my call simply fails (this is very intermittent and only some random numbers).

That said, I have some issues with DTMF Relay when I select MTP on the SIP Trunk. DTMF Relay only works if the call is G.729r8 all the way from the CUCM to the ITSP. If the ITSP replies back with G.729br8, the call might established but will simply be “voice-only”.

The current setup is no MTP is selected and everything is working perfectly. I am happy with that until I place a call on hold, which when I do so, the call immediately terminate. Could you please help me understand why?

I have all media resources configured such as G.729r8 MTP, G.729br8 MTP, G.711u MTP, Transcoding with all codecs, etc. All MRG and MRGL are configured on all devices and SIP Trunks.

Below is an example of a call that is connected with the current setup:

Hi Johnny,

SIP messaging is correct from CUCM side and when CUCM try to insert moh stream in the call its gets disconnected and disconnection comes from CUBE side.

One thing comes to my mind is when CUCM send ack with codes details as below

c=IN IP4 10.18.81.10
t=0 0
m=audio 4000 RTP/AVP 18
a=X-cisco-media:umoh
a=rtpmap:18 G729/8000
a=ptime:20
a=fmtp:18 annexb=no
a=sendonly

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It send annexb=no . So can you check codec applied to dial-peer between CUBE and CUCM , if its contains only G.729b then add more g729 codecs to that dial-peer using voice class codec.

Thanks

Manish

Hello Manish,

Thanks so much for your mail.

Here is what I picked up last night when I was having a look into the problem:

As you can see in my first set of logs, when the call was active, the codec being negotiated between the ITSP and the CUBE was set to G.729br8.

When the call is put on hold and the CUCM respond back to with an ACK message, the codec being sent to the CUBE is G.728r8.

All my voice class codec contains both G.729r8 first and then G.729br8 as the second codec preference.

What is funny is this:

Last night any incoming or outgoing calls that negotiated G.729r8 when active, when you put those calls on hold, they do not drop at all. You are able to put them on hold but when you resume, the audio does not resume and the call end automatically after couple of seconds.

I have managed to have this solution works with lack by having the following:

When I maintain SIP all the way from CUCM --> SIP Trunk --> CUBE --> SIP Trunk --> ITSP, all incoming and outgoing calls are working fine and DTMF relay also works well. The only thing lacking here is when you put the call on hold, it fails automatically.

When I have H.323 between the CUCM and CUBE and SIP from the CUBE to the ITSP, all incoming and outgoing calls works fine and I am also able to place the call on hold no matter which codec is negotiated such as G.729r8 or G.729br8. The only issue with this setup is DTMF relay is being negotiated as inband, hence DTMF relay does not work with this setup at all.

Please advise.

I would suggest keep SIP protocol in all call leg if you are peering with Telco through SIP.

As you said now calls are working on hold but fails when you resume it , can you attach ccsip logs from cube for this call failure scenario.

Thanks

Manish

Hi Manish,

Again, excellent feedback. Much appreciated.

I will try the commands suggested above and see if I can get DTMF to work correctly while interworking H.323 and SIP.

But my ultimate goal is to have SIP all way from the CUCM to the CUBE and from the CUBE to the ITSP.

If I enable SIP Early Offer with MTP on the CUCM going to the CUBE, all SIP Invite sent from the CUCM to the CUBE uses G.729r8 as the codec and once the call is established using G.729r8 should the ITSP reply with that codec, the call succeed and I am able to see an active MTP session using G.729 when I issue the command # show sccp connections.

One thing that I saw is that my ITSP love so much sending G.729br8 most of the times, so even if using SIP EO with MTP on the SIP Trunk to the CUBE, when I sent my INVITE out from the CUCM to the CUBE using G.729r8, specially on call center numbers such as 0800 numbers, you will see that the call established but the codec being negotiated is G.729br8 which is voice only (missing DTMF).

I will be doing some intensive test again later on this week and will send the logs.

Here is my question to both of you:

Which is the best way of having a proper SIP to SIP setup all the way that will not pose any problem?

Do I have to enable Early Offer on the SIP Profile used by the CUBE SIP Trunk or should I use the normal Standard SIP Profile? Do I need to enable MTP on my CUBE SIP Trunk or not?

From the CUBE point of view, I have a voice class codec that support G.729r8 or G.729br8 and the DTMF Relay method supported by the ITSP is RFC 2833.

I will send more logs for each scenario. I think that we are getting close to the resolution of this problem.

Thanks again for your support fellows.

You asked which version of CUCM I am running and its version: 9.1.2.11900-12

The recommended approach is to use DO to EO. Ie configure your CUCM to do DO to CUBE and CUBE to do EO to ITSP. This removes the need to use MTP for EO on the sip trunk. The only place you should enable EO support is the parameter on the sip profile that says " enable eo support for voice and video insert MTP if needed"

You should enable EO on your CUBE with the ff: command

voice service voip

sip

early-offer forced

The codec that your ITSP will use for each call will depend on your codec preference in your voice class config applied to the dial-peer

With this INVITE sent to the ITSP, your preference says use G729br8 first, then G711ulaw 2nd, then G711alaw as the 3rd option.

m=audio 22256 RTP/AVP 18 0 8 101
c=IN IP4 10.18.81.2
a=rtpmap:18 G729/8000
a=fmtp:18 annexb=yes
a=rtpmap:0 PCMU/8000
a=rtpmap:8 PCMA/8000

The ITSP should honour your codec preference. If you remove G729br8 from your codec list, then your ITSP will not negotiate that codec at all and that's what I suggested. Your voice class codec will look like this..

voice class codec 1
 codec preference 1 g729r8
 codec preference 2 g711ulaw
 codec preference 3 g711alaw

Hello Ayodeji,

how are you ? I enjoy reading your thoughtful posts.

" This removes the need to use MTP for EO on the sip trunk. The only place you should enable EO support is the parameter on the sip profile that says " enable eo support for voice and video insert MTP if needed"

-- This seems contradictory...if CUBE is already doing DO-EO then why would the SIP trunk profile need the " enable eo support for voice and video insert MTP if needed"

Are you saying for call-hold-resume to work, we need EARLY offer towards the ITSP in addition to the CUCM SIP trunk setting " enable eo support for voice and video insert MTP if needed" ?

thanks,Padhu

Padhu,

Thanks for the compliments :)

In some scenarios or call flows you do require EO from CUCM. In previous versions of CUCM there was no way to enable EO for certain call types and not for others. You had to use a MTP to send EO out. With this feature, you will be able to use EO only for calls that absolute need them and MTP will be inserted if required. Another benefit of this is that some phone models do generate EO, which again negates the need to  invoke MTP and again if there are phones that require EO in this type of call flow, then MTP will be inserted only for them

Regards

First of all (+5) to Manish on his excellent support so far. Great Job as always..

I do agree that you should use sip to sip all the way in your deployment, but some older relase of cucm do not work well with sip. If you want to keep your h323 setup, here is how to resolve your dtmf issue without using an MTP

##dial-peer to cucm

dial-peer voice xx voip
dtmf-relay h245-alphanumeric

//outbound to ITSP SIP dial-peer

dial-peer voice 101 voip
dtmf-relay rtp-nte digit-drop

Back your sip issues..

The logs show that your CUBE has negotiated the call based on G729 annexB. However CUCM MOH doesn't support G729annexB, If you check your IPVMS service parameters, you observe its only annex A that is supported. Hence the reason why the call fails once its put on hold. There is no codec renegotiation going on here.

So what are your options? You should remove G729 annexB from your codec list, so you only use G729annexa.

This brings us to the next issue. It looks like you have tried this and calls fail upon resuming them. Please send us logs as requested by Manish..

For those of you who ran into this issue recently (as I did) I thought I would share the solution that worked for me. In the CUBE router configuration, I needed to configure midcall-signaling passthru media-change on the voice service voip profile in the router configuration, like this:

RouterName# config t

RouterName(config)# voice service voip

RouterName(conf-voi-serv)#sip

RouterName(conf-serv-sip)#midcall-signaling passthru media change

I hope this helps someone like it helped me!
