Upgrade for Pub & Sub from CUCM 7.1.3 to 8.0.3

Hi there,

I am planning an upgrade for Pub & Sub from CUCM 7.1.3 to 8.0.3 since we want to go virtualization.

The 8.0.3 will be virtualized on UCS server with ESXi installed. Right now the Pub is on MCS 7825-H2 with 2GB RAM and 76GB HD with two partitions.

I was thinking of upgrading the PUB to 8.0.3 first, then do a fresh install of virtualized SUB on VMWare ESXi server, then sync two servers.

However, 8.0.3 requires minimum 4GB RAM and 146GB disk drive according to the following document:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/voicesw/ps6790/ps5748/ps378/prod_brochure0900aecd8062a4f9.htmlIf  I do a fresh install of 8.0.3 on the ESXi, how can I move the configuration from the previous 7.1.3 system to the new 8.0.3? I don't want to configure the 8.0.3 manually.

Is there workaround about this upgrade?

Please advise. Thanks.

Can I use the DMA tool to migrate the configuration data from 7.1.3(a)su1 to 8.0.3?  or DMA is just for the migration from Windows to Linux?

You do not need to use the DMA tool to upgrade from CUCM 7.x to 8.X.  You will need to make sure your hardware is supported for CUCM 8.0.  Also you will need an Software Features upgrade PAK to register.

Here is the upgrade path which states you can directly upgrade:

I ran into an issue where I upgraded to 8.0 from 7 and I was not able to start any of the services because the hardware I used was not supported.  It was strange that the upgrade allowed me to finish and not giving me this warning before I started the upgarde.  I had to switch versions and move back to the CUCM 7 on my servers.

Check the hardware compatibility matrix found here:

Thanks Jose.

But I don't have compatibility concerns.

It is just that I can't upgrade the 7.1.3 to 8.0.3 on the physical server because of the limited memory and HD size.

I am looking for the working around that I can upgrade to 8.0.3 and also get the server virtualized without purchasing additional HW.

Thanks.

I see.  How about take a backup of your 7.1.3 MCS CUCM install, Install a clean 7.1.3 version in VMware on your UCS box.  Then upgrade the 7.1.3 you have on your UCS to 8.0.3.

I have not tried this in my lab but I don't see why this can't work.  Of course you will have to rehome your LIC files to the license MAC address on your VM install.  See this link it might help.
