I have a working 8861 VPN connected user, who is unable to change the Alternate TFTP.  It is greyed out, and can not change it to ON from OFF.

Can the user Reset  any of the Settings,  - network, security, without losing their VPN Connectivity.

They currently have no TFTP server settings.

which VPN solution you are using to connect the phones from outside. WIth ASA, you might have connected the phones in the internal network first so that the phones have contacted the TFTP server and download the config file before moving the phone to outside network. So modifying the TFTP config could cause issues.

We are connecting using a CiscoAnyconnect PhoneVPN.

Besides having the phone brought back into the office and connecting it to the inside network,  there is no way we can unlock or turn on the ability to modify the Alternate TFTP.

I'm really just trying to give them the ability to add a background image.

Follow below procedure

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cuipph/8800-series/english/adminguide/P881_BK_C136782F_00_cisco-ip-phone-8800_series/P881_BK_C136782F_00_cisco-ip-phone-8811-8841_chapter_011.html#CUIP_TK_SA751BFE_00

Set TFTP Server 1 Field

Procedure
Step 1   Unlock the CTL or ITL file if necessary (for example, if you are changing the administrative domain of the phone). If the CTL and ITL files both exist, unlock either file.
Step 2   If DHCP is enabled, set the Alternate TFTP option to Yes.
Step 3   Scroll to the TFTP Server 1 option, press Select, and enter a new TFTP server IP address.
Step 4   Press Apply then press Save.

I don't see an option to Unlock the ctl or itl files.   Do you mean reset them ?

Can  I reset them via Admin Settings, Reset Settings,  Security Settings, and or the Network Settings.

Will the user have an issue reconnecting to the VPN ?

I verified the Common Phone profile does not have a password.

I guess it cannot be done without losing the VPN settings and connectivity.
