Why does a Cisco 8831NR with the latest SR3 Firmware disallow Wireless Mic Usage?

Hi,

I'm looking into a fault with a Cisco 8831 spider phone does not have an option in the settings to use a wireless Mic.

Looking around on Cisco's site I've found that there is a slight variant of the traditional 8831 with model number 8831NR. The 8831NR version uses a special firmware load (sip8831.10-3-1SR3-5) which permanently disables the wireless feature.

They also pointed out that when this firmware is used and the Wireless feature is disabled, it can not be re-enabled in later firmware versions...

Is there any particular reason why Cisco implemented this feature? is the 8831NR a feature limited model as standard? or is the model defined by the firmware used? Why can the firmware not be downgraded retrospectively?

Many thanks

Hi,

The 8831NR has the radio disabled for the wireless mics. The NR means "No Radio." The reason why this NR model exists is for organizations who require DECT permanently disabled for security reasons. The DECT radio cannot be enabled on the NR.

Note: There are other "NR" models in the Cisco portfolio. For example, the 8851NR, the 8865NR, and the DX80-NR.

David
