Hi guys,
Considering hub and spoke networks, what are the reasons having IP distribution layer or just core layer? Distance? Simplicity? Costs? Number of hops? Pairs of fiber that are needed to make the architecture?
Let's assume 200 spokes and 2 hubs and each site is separated on average by 30 miles.
Best regards,
Nuno Costa

Hello Nuno Costa;
I will answer your question the way I understood it.
As far as i am aware; the Hub-And-Spoke network is typically a flat network. However; compared to traditional network design comprising the core layer, distribution layer and access layer, a Hub-And-Spoke network has no distribution layer and the core layer device (hub device) connects to access layer devices (spoke devices) directly.
To implement the complete three-layer architecture, you only need to configure the core layer as the distribution layer and add new core-layer devices.
I hope this helps, if not please provide more details on what you want to achieve and i will do my best to help out.
Regards

Hello said.izawi,
Thank you for your answer. I understand your point of view.
This case is not about only the logical design but also physical constrains regarding distances. I need to consider transmission technologies like SDH, CWDM, DWDM versus reducing the distances with more aggregation sites to avoid transmission. This will impact the logical design and bring the three layers to the scheme.
I have a basic scheme attached to this conversation.
best regards,
NC

Hi Nuno,
Hub and Spoke architecture are been deployed by clients where they want all traffic to be routed via central sites to each other clients and in way of reduced cost of having full meshed architecture for direct connectivity as well.
Standard three tier architecture are been followed in DC with distribution , core layer for different uses to have better performance and ease of troubleshooting in production.
Hope that clarifies..
