Sizing a "Core" VRF Router

HEATH FREEL

The scenario is that we will be "Wholesaling" Circuits from other carriers. All will map to a centralized Router running a VRF per customer. The question is, how do I know how to size the router appropriately?

How many VRF's can I have,

What would be the Max Throughput?

Thanks in advance.

It all depends on the platform of the router you are getting.  For example, the sup-720-3C for the 6500 supports 1024 VRFs with the maximum number of supported IPv4 routes of 256000 for the entire device. So, if you have 10 vrfs on your device each vrf can have a max of 25600 routes.  It all varies platform by platform.

Thanks Reza. Are you aware of any documents that list the Platforms and thier limits?

Hi

Please check the below mentioned table for capacity planning.

No, unfortunately not.  Cisco has just too many different platforms.  You would have to read the data sheet for each platform you are installing.  Look at the data sheet for 6500, 7600, 7200, ASR series routers.

I was looking more for an overview of all supported Models. ISR G2 - 2900's 3900's, ASR1000, as well as the 6500/7200.

Hi

Please go with the datasheet of each product. That will help you to take the decision.
