Secure ACS 1112 - Cant login

I'm the only Network Admin here and on the shelf there is a Secure ACS 1112. I took it down and found the rollover cable (RJ45-Serial) and Recovery CD for the unit. I have no idea what the login credentials or the IP address is and I need to get in it. I connected the rollover cable and using hyperterminal from WInXP doesnt work, I inserted the CD into the drive and cant log in no matter what I try.

With hypertermial I used coms 7,9,10 and 11 and all difeerent types of bits 115200, 57600, 9600 etc and I see nothing on the hyperterminal, although on the bottom left it does say connected but I just see a blank white screen with a black blinking cursor.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Warren,

Correct, the only option would be to have a PC with a serial port, or alternatively to get a USB-to-Serial adapter, such as the following:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-39488.html

Monitor and keyboard connectors are not officially supported on the CSACS 1112 appliance:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/cisco_secure_access_control_server_for_solution_engine/4.0/installation/guide/appliance/ovrvuap.html#wpxref23441

Hi Warren,

The details for the console connection to a 1112 appliance can be found at the following link:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/cisco_secure_access_control_server_for_solution_engine/4.2/installation/guide/csacs_1120/Chapter_2.html#wp1038465

So we should choose 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no hardware flow control.

If this still does not work, could you confirm that through the same console cable you can correctly access other devices?

I've already tried those settings with another new rollover cable, the blue rj-45 to db9, didnt work.

The way it's set up now is I have the rj45 cable in the laptop lan port and the serial end in the acs. I dont have a serial port on my laptop so I cant do it in reverse. Any suggestions?

Hi Warren,

I doubt that way (rj45 on PC and serial DB-9 on ACS) will ever work: these console cables are meant to have the rj45 connector plugged in to the rj45 console port (where available) of the Cisco device, not to the ethernet port of a PC.

The only way to connect a PC to the console port of ACS 1112 is through a DB-9 port on the PC going to the to DB-9 port of ACS 1112:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/cisco_secure_access_control_server_for_solution_engine/4.0/installation/guide/appliance/instalap.html#wp1065399

By the way, apologies for copying the wrong link on my previous post, the baud rate for ACS 1112 should be115200:

Baud = 115200

Databits = 8

Stops = 1

Flow control = None

Thanks I appreciate your help on this.

So, you said that the only way to connect a PC to the console port of ACS 1112 is through a DB-9 female to DB-9 female null-modem cable. Where do I connect the other female end to? My laptop does not have a male serial port.

I guess I'll connect through the monitor \keyboard ports and see if that works.

Thanks.

I chose to connect via keyboard/monitor. Thanks for the quick help.

Glad it helped Warren.

Feel free to ping us back in case any further help would be needed on this in the future.

ok, I connected via the keyboard/monitor and was able to reimage with the recovery CD, (didnt know it used Windows NT as an OS).

Now, I get a message that says. "Appliance is functioning normally. To administer this appliance, please connect via serial port or through a web browser".

so, I'm figurin gI cant connect through a web browser since there is no default IP on the appliance. So I guess I'm kinda stuck in the same situation as before correct? I still need a usb-male serial adapter I suppose.

Thanks.

Correct Warren, monitor and keyboard are not officially supported:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/cisco_secure_access_control_server_for_solution_engine/4.0/installation/guide/appliance/ovrvuap.html#wpxref23441

This means that they may work (for example up to the re-image part, as you saw), but the only guaranteed method up to the final configuration is through the console cable.
