ASR1002 boot issue after IOS downgrade

Dear All,

I have a problem with an ASR1002 (not X) ROM: IOS-XE ROMMON, but now, I can not boot it up.

I have tried to downgrade the IOS. Now I think I made a mistake, I guess the RP2 IOS is not right, I should have choose a RP1 IOS instead. But it is too late now.

Now the router is waiting for me to respond a “name1” , but I don’t know what should I type/choose.

Do you have any idea, please?

Please help me to boot it up somehow, I will much appreciate your help.

Many thanks,

Arpad

The factory IOS : asr1000rp1-adventerprisek9.03.13.02a.S.154-3.S2a-ext.bin

New IOS:               asr1000rp2-advipservicesk9_noli.03.13.01.S.154-3.S1-ext.bin

I have setup the boot order to this, this is in the running config now:

boot-start-marker

boot system flash bootflash:/asr1000rp2-advipservicesk9_noli.03.13.01.S.154-3.S1-ext.bin

boot system flash bootflash:/asr1000rp1-adventerprisek9.03.13.02a.S.154-3.S2a-ext.bin

boot-end-marker

At the moment the router always wants to boot from bootflash:/asr1000rp2-advipservicesk9_noli.03.13.01.S.154-3.S1-ext.bin

And causes the following result:

System Bootstrap, Version 15.3(3r)S, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

Here, it is waiting for me to respond a “name1” , but I don’t know what should I type/choose.

Do you have any idea, please?

Option 2:

I’ve already tried to go to ROMMON and ignore the config and boot from a USB, but unfortunately that did not work for me.

It always wants to boot the wrong RP2 IOS from flash:

Setup to “ignore system config”:

rommon 1 > confreg

           Configuration Summary

   (Virtual Configuration Register: 0x2102)

enabled are:

[ 0 ] load rom after netboot fails

[ 1 ] console baud: 9600

boot: ...... image specified by the boot system commands or default to: cisco2-ASR1002-RP1

do you wish to change the configuration? y/n  [n]:  y

enable  "diagnostic mode"? y/n  [n]:  n

enable  "use net in IP bcast address"? y/n  [n]:

disable "load rom after netboot fails"? y/n  [n]:

enable  "use all zero broadcast"? y/n  [n]:

enable  "break/abort has effect"? y/n  [n]:

enable  "ignore system config info"? y/n  [n]:  y

change console baud rate? y/n  [n]:

change the boot characteristics? y/n  [n]:

           Configuration Summary

   (Virtual Configuration Register: 0x2142)

enabled are:

[ 0 ] load rom after netboot fails

[ 1 ] ignore system config info

[ 2 ] console baud: 9600

boot: ...... image specified by the boot system commands or default to: cisco2-ASR1002-RP1

rommon 1 > boot usb0:/asr1000rp1-adventerprisek9.03.13.02a.S.154-3.S2a-ext.bin

Please reset before booting

rommon 2 > reset

Resetting .......

Result after “reset”, (still wants to boot from the wrong flash IOS):

The factory IOS : asr1000rp1-adventerprisek9.03.13.02a.S.154-3.S2a-ext.bin
New IOS: asr1000rp2-advipservicesk9_noli.03.13.01.S.154-3.S1-ext.bin

Of course it won't work.  The ASR has an RP1 but you're forcing the ASR to load an IOS meant for RP2 and this is why the router won't load the new IOS.

Thanks Leo.

Finally i have find a solution to my problem (setup a boot order in ROMMON which excepted by the router.) the solution is, to setup the confreg to 0x0 and follow the process below:

Perform the following steps:

1. Verify that the image file is present in the harddisk:, bootflash:, or external USB device (usb0: or usb1:) by using the dir file-system command at the rommon prompt.

2. When you run the dir file-systemcommand, if a message similar to "Please reset before continuing" is displayed, reconfigure the configuration-register to 0x0 and then run the reset command to allow the router to enter the rommon prompt without reattempting to boot using an invalid image.

rommon> dir harddisk:
Please reset before continuing <<<<<
rommon> confreg 0x0
rommon> reset

3. Boot the router from the rommon prompt by using a command similar to the following example:

rommon>BOOT=harddisk:asr1000rp1-ipbasek9.03.05.01.S.152-1.S1.bin

4. To save the current environment variable setting, run the synccommand as follows:

rommon> sync

5. Ensure that autoboot has been enabled by using the confreg 0x2102command at the rommon prompt, and then run the reset command at the same prompt.

Thanks a lot!!!

Thanks Mate
