congestion in TCP/IP

i want to know that what can be causes for congestion in LAN using TCP/IP ,the exact situation is that gateway is dropping the packets and connection is lost.so what can be causes & what can be solution to this

One of the main reason for congestion in a LAN environment could be due to Virus in the LAN. Because under normal circumstances there cannot be so much traffic in the LAN that it can cause congestion. So check if some IP is pumping lots of traffic from a port. You can do this by enabling "ip route cache flow" on the ethernet interface on the gateway and use the "sh ip cache flow" command and look for high traffic from a PC or on malicious ports. Once they are identified try applying an access list and block those ports. Then check if the congestion stops.
