determination of switch using SNMP?

hi,

is there an easy way to determine what kind of switch i'm managing by using SNMP requests? i think SysObjectID would be suited for that, but am not sure.

Is there an overview available what switch reports which SysObjectID?

Right now i'm specifically looking for the Catalyst 3550 family. I also need to be able to determine which one of those exactly i'm managing, including which modules are built into it (if available).

So for the modular ones i need to find out which slots are occupied by which modules. Is that possible using SNMP? I'm looking through the MIB files for a few days now but still don't know which OIDs to request.

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Hendrik Jahnke

You may also try polling sysDescr (which is similar to show version)

The sysObjectID would be mapped to an entry in the CISCO-PRODUCTS-MIB

As far as what modules are in a switch, moduleType from CISCO-STACK-MIB might be the object you are looking for

If you need to be able to identify which sysObjectID goes with which switch then you can use the following tool

http://jaguar.ir.miami.edu/~marcus/snmptrans.html

This translation both OID string and also basic device descriptions e.g. 3550

Hope this help

thanks for pointing me to that MIB-file, it helped a bit. i think all the information i need is stored there, unfortunately the naming scheme of the catalyst 3550 series is a lil bit confusing there.

according to the cisco product site, there are the following versions of the 3550:

Cisco Catalyst 3550 48 SMI/EMI Switch

Cisco Catalyst 3550 24 DC SMI Switch

Cisco Catalyst 3550 24 FX SMI Switch

Cisco Catalyst 3550 24 PWR Switch

Cisco Catalyst 3550 24 SMI/EMI Switch

Cisco Catalyst 3550 12G Switch

Cisco Catalyst 3550 12T Switch

in the MIB-file, there are the following names:

catalyst355048

cat355024Dc

cat355024Mmf

catalyst355024PWR

catalyst355024

catalyst355012G

catalyst355012T

do you know if i made the right assumption about 'cat355024Mmf' being the 'Cisco Catalyst 3550 24 FX' model? the rest seems to be pretty obvious if you assume this.

i'm still looking into the modules thing.

thanks.
