High Transmit Discard errors being reported by Solarwinds

Solarwinds is our main network monitoring tool.

For a while now it has been reporting transmit discard errors on a group of 6 contiguous gig ports on one of our 6509. Today alone 240,000 discards on each of these ports has been recorded. Each gig port has the identical amount of discards, namely 242,655..

Any tips for trouble shooting this issue would be appreciated.

Thanks

What model is the line card? Can you list the six ports involved?

Thanks

Line card is:

1   48  SFM-capable 48 port 10/100/1000mb RJ45 WS-X6548-GE-TX

The ports involved are gig1/1 thru gig1/8  gig1/1 and gig1/4 do not have anything plugged into it

This could be due to the oversubscription issue described here:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps700/products_tech_note09186a00801751d7.shtml#ASIC

In the near term, you could disperse these actively utilized ports to the rest of the line card, keeping in mind the card shares "a 1 Mb buffer between a group of  ports (1-8, 9-16, 17-24, 25-32, 33-40, and 41-48) since each block of  eight ports is 8:1 oversubscribed. The aggregate throughput of each  block of eight ports cannot exceed 1 Gbps." In the longer term, you  might consider replacing the WS-X6548-GE-TX with a higher-end one that's  less oversubscribed. That's all assuming these heavily utilized ports  are passing legitimate traffic, or else you could hunt down the source  of the heavy traffic and address that.

Thanks for the input. The documentation was quit informative. This is the output from show counters interface | include qos3Outlost:

SALVE_6509-2#show counters interface gig1/2 | include qos3Outlost

53. qos3Outlost = 0

SALVE_6509-2#show counters interface gig1/3 | include qos3Outlost

53. qos3Outlost = 0

SALVE_6509-2#show counters interface gig1/5 | include qos3Outlost

53. qos3Outlost = 0

SALVE_6509-2#show counters interface gig1/6 | include qos3Outlost

53. qos3Outlost = 0

SALVE_6509-2#show counters interface gig1/7 | include qos3Outlost

53. qos3Outlost = 0

SALVE_6509-2#show counters interface gig1/8 | include qos3Outlost

53. qos3Outlost = 0

I do not see any drops, would that indicate that buffers are not an issue?. So far since midnight today, each of these interfaces is showing 850.000 discards. Ports gig1/1 and gig1/4 at the current time are empty

Thanks

Do you see the same number--850,000--under "Total Output Drops" when you run "show interface gig1/2" (for example)? According to the Solarwinds manual, that's what "transmit discard" corresponds to.

Do you happen to have QoS policing applied to these interfaces?
