How much space needed for 3650 denali 16.3.8 upgrade

on the 3650 boxes that have 16.3.6 denali, how much space is needed?  I have a few boxes that have about 460MB's free after the 16.3.8 bin file has been copied over which is 535MB's.  I also don't see the new install from TFTP line used if I had to install there.  I found the tftp install using the older software install language but not request platform software package

Once you have cleaned the flash it will be fine for expansion , i have stacks of these in operation running 16.3.7 and thats the way we did it , follow the doc you should be fine

do you mean this command below ? in this section , or are you referring to something else ?

Upgrading from Cisco IOS XE 3.xE to Cisco IOS XE Denali 16.1.x,16.2.x, or 16.3.x in Install Mode

Step 2blank.gif Copy the image from your tftp server to flash.

Accessing tftp://5.28.11.250/cat3k_caa-universalk9.16.03.05.SPA.bin...

Hi
install mode can need up to a 1GB but that specific release notes do not say , but does stress to clean the flash first , read the upgrade section shows exactly how to do it in steps

I ran the software clean all functions when we went to denali initially. The device had about 1GB free before copying the 535MB file but only has 460 free now. What I don't know is if the file needs more space for the bin file to expand. I also don't see the command where I can install from a TFTP server. If I didn't have enough space, maybe I can delete the file locally and just install from TFTP but I'm not seeing those commands when going from existing denali code to newer

Thanks for you the info. I'll find out this weekend if it is fine. Just wanted to check first. I was referring to other types of switches that let you do install a tar file from a server. I'm probably good and thanks!

Ah ye the .tar, thats gone with these new package releases on the 9ks anyway, it seems everything now has to be install mode ready , cleaned and then this software install command , although we've dont quite a few lately and seems stable in fairness , good luck with it

here you go on minimum space requirement..

In-Place Package Expansion for Software Images

The software image installation process is now optimized:

  • The space required for installation is reduced—after you have copied the.bin file to flash, only 20MB of additional space is required to complete the installation.
  • The.bin file is automatically deleted after completion of installation.

The installation procedure you have to follow remains the same. See Upgrading the Switch Software

Thanks, everything worked out perfectly and I didn't need to do any extra cleanup.  20MB's extra space used seems about right but I had thought there was more expansion from when I went to 3.x to denali but this was from denali code to denali code and everything worked out fine.  thanks for getting back
