Network monitoring basically refers to the practice of overseeing the operation of a computer network using specialized management software tools, known as Network Management Software, aka NMS apps. Network monitoring systems are used to ensure availability and overall performance of computers (hosts) and network services. These systems are typically employed on larger scale corporate and university IT networks.
NMS applications work mostly work on FCAPS. FCAPS is a network management framework created by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The term itself is an acronym that stands for Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance and Security.
We have many applications available in market targeting Small Business to Enterprise from their products and have wide feature options to effectively manage the network.
It is however, majorly depend on the requirement of the user/Organisation and their Network, on what they want to monitor/Manage as priority on the network.
Some tools from open source, to freeware to highly paid applications are there.
From Cisco there is Cisco Prime Infrastructure which is able to manage Wired and Wireless Infrastructure of an Enterprise.
There are many more from other vendors, like Solarwinds Orion, HP Open View, PRTG, MRTG, Cacti, OpenNMS etc. A whole world of such application.
