What is the Catalyst 9000 Series Equivalent to the WS-C3850-12S-S?

Hi,

I am a little bit confused with the EOL Announcements for the Catalyst 3850-X Series Switches.

On the Website it says the Hardware is not put on EoL - but Cisco pushes to Transition to the 9000 Series.

Which IOS XE version is the highest Version for a 3850-X Switch

And what is the Equivalent 9000 Series Switch for a WS-C3850-12S-S?

Thanks in advance for your Assistance.

Best regards

Max

Dear Luis,

Thanks for the Links - however none of the 9300 Series Switches provide a 12 Port SFP Configuration.

It seems that I have to go for the 9500 Series Switch Family to have SFP Ports that mirror the WS-C3850-12S-S.

Unfortunately there are no Switches with a Mix of PoE & non PoE Ports,

like one with 48 Ports altogether, where the first 12 can do PoE, while the rest are non PoE.

I still do not understand, why Cisco has not updated the 3850 Series Website with EoL Dates on the Main Page?

Also it was a Challenge to get my Head around the Conversions between IOS versus IOS XE Firmware Versions,

And which Version will be supported by which particular Switches - Cisco should make that much easier.

Hi Max,

If you want to replace the 3850-12S at the distribution or core layer I would say the Cat 9500 series is what you're looking for.

How about C9500-16X ?

Latest version for your 3850 on Fuji track is 16.9.2, for Everest 16.6.5.

As for Cat 9k series Gibraltar 16.10 has been release, it seems like it won't be release for the 3850s

Hope this helps :)

Regards
Jochen

Hi Jochen,

our Mother Company currently has the 2960-X / 2960-XR / 3850-X Models listed as approved to be used in the Corporate Network Environment.

The 12 Port SFP will not have much to do - so both the WS-C3850-12S-S and the C9500-16X are overkill.

Because I uplink only Building Management Systems to them, that operate in the 10/100 Transfer Range with lots of tiny Packages, 1000 Mbit Transfer Rates will never be utilised.

It is really tricky with the 3850-X for example, since they can run IOS or IOS XE,

but the Main 3850 Series Page still lists the 3850 Hardware as not EoL,

although seemingly the last IOS XE Firmware has been released.

And Cisco has started to push Customers to migrate to the new 9000 Series Switch Family.

Cisco should simplify this and make it easier to understand.

Thanks for your Assistance!

Best regards

Max
