Is there a way to restore the device to factory settings. I tried the reset button with a paper clip.

Hi Thomas,
Connect to the firewall through ssh or telnet, put in the ssh username and password, you will get into the privelege mode, then type in "login", it would again ask you for username and password, put in the same for ssh that you used earlier, it will log you into the config mode after that. Once you arer there, type in :
enable pssword
and your enable password would be changed.
Now if you do not have any ssh or telnet access, then follow this doc:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa71/configuration/guide/trouble.html#wp1058131
Hope this helps:
Thanks,
Varun

once you have access to the console perorm the following;
write erase
