how is asa redundancy implemented.
the pix counterpart has a failover firewall which was half the price of the primary pix.
is this still true with the asa?
thanks

with asa/pix v7, there are 2 options for failover, namely active/active and active/standby.
as the name suggested active/standby is the failover we use for pix v6; whereas active/active is more for load balancing.

pricing is different for ASA
so, the second ASA is full price.

so they should have the same part number?
thanks

Yeah.... it will have the same part number.. for eg, if you order ASA5510-AIP10-K9, you need to order the same box for redundancy.... This can be considered disadvantageous when compared with PIX, but has other advantages, in the fact that both the units can work as full fledged ASA's in case of any requirements, which isnt the case in PIX. The secondary cannot be used as a standalone box.
Hope this helps...
