hi there, im trying to setup failover between two ASA 5510 and on inter e0/3 (on both ASA's) i have plugged a crossover a cable directly connecting them. Will this work to configure LAN based failover with stateful failover or do I need to connect the 2 asa's with a serial cable?

You don't need a serial cable with ASA's. I would recommend that you put a switch in between the failover connections. If you loose an ASA both e0/3 interfaces will go down and you may run into issues.

hi there, thanks for the reply. can the switch have any other devices plugged into it or does it just have to be a switch exclusive for the 2 ports of the 2 asa's?

You should put both failover interfaces in their own vlan, if you have other devices plugged into the switch.
