It appears you are using the session command to reach it IPS module on it's command line interface (CLI) from the ASA's cli.

IPS on an ASA requires a license be applied so that it can keep the signature file on which it bases its policies up to date. Just having the software or hardware module does not by itself license the IPS updates.

It shouldn't kick you out though just because your IPS isn't licensed. Is that what it's doing?

I thought that same thing. Yes, it is giving me the error and then terminating the session.

You can try doing the initial setup from ASDM.

If you run through the ASA setup wizard in ASDM, you can accept all the current settings for the ASA itself until you get to the step to configure the IPS. Enter the parameters for the module's connectivity there and complete the wizard.

You can then perhaps configure the module further using either ssh or the IPS configuration section of ASDM / IDM (or even the free IPS Manager Express - IME).
