Hi Cisco Community,
This is my first post and I'm an accidental ASA 'administrator' so please be 'gentle' :).
I just started configuring a brand new ASA 5516-X which is to replace a very old 5510 (ASA 8.2(2), ASDM 6.2.(5)
So far, I've setup the outside and inside interfaces and ASDM access. I decided to run the Startup wizard and go through the steps and see what it does.
PAT vs NAT selection is the only step that I'm not sure about in terms of what exactly it does to ASA's configuration. E.g. if PAT is selected the summary page of the wizard says: 'PAT is configured on inside interface'.
I'm familiar with PAT/NAT concepts in general and I think I almost always used the PAT option on ASAs I've been working on so far but I don't remember having to be specific in terms of 'either-or'
What I have here is a range of 5 public IPs. (say, 1.2.3.4 - 8). One of them (say 1.2.3.4) is used for the External interface on ASA 5510 so all internal traffic appears to the outside world to have come from that IP address (i.e. PAT)
However, there are also some public servers setup to use their own public IPs which are setup as Network objects. E.g. mail server's Public IP is 1.2.3.6 instead of 1.2.3.4
So, to me NAT rules on the old ASA 5510 are a mix of PAT and NAT.
Questions:
1. Is it possible to actually check and see 'explicitly' what type of address translation is used on the old 5510?
2. If I go ahead and finish the Startup wizard using PAT will I be able to setup Public servers (i.e NAT rules) the same way on the new ASA 5516-X.
Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
