PIX 501 disconnects console and won't allow ssh

Hi,

So this pix was setup recently and worked for a week and then bam, it stopped working (mostly).

When I'm connected to the console through the serial port it randomly disconnects me. I reconnect and the console is where I left it last. Sometimes it takes 30 seconds, sometimes a few minutes, but always less than 10 minutes. The console timeout was originally set to 0 and then I later changed it to 60 just to make sure it wasn't some wierd quirk.

The config is allowing all outside/inside connections to ssh and had worked fine until recently. Know if won't allow an SSH connection from inside or outside.

I did reload the pix and that didn't help. I'm planning on power cycling it later tonight when the store is closed.

The PIX is only used for a site to site VPN connection. The main application that runs over the tunnel is a telnet app. it works about 30% of the time and timesout a lot. I can ping across the tunnel all day long and although there are a few times during the day when the ping delay is a little high, the connection is always there.

Is this PIX suffering from faulty hardware? Is there anyway to know for sure?

Thanks.

you need to see this through the console.. there are lots of commands on pix which can help you to find where the problem is.. first thing, check the cpu and any other error messages on the pix.. see if the pix hangs or reboots by itself.. this doc will give you some important commands which u might need to have a look at:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/vpndevc/ps2030/products_tech_note09186a008009491c.shtml

if the cpu usage is high, you need to figure out which process is eating up the cpu.. if not, try opening a tac case..let us know if u need any more info..
