That symptom could also be caused by a wrong config-register. What does the following command give you?

asa# sh ver | i register

Configuration register is 0x1

If it is not 0x1, change it to that value:

asa(config)# config-register 0x1

i can save the config now and did reload.

config is saved now.

The config was also saved before. But due to the config-register the startup-config was not applied after loading the image.

it shows no file name is this normal?

If you don't see any variables in "sh bootvar" it defaults to the first image in flash and the saved startup-config. So everything fine here.

Sounds like the internal flash memory might be faulty, that's why it boots up to its factory default.

You might want to RMA the ASA.

Hi Jennifer,

I did sh boot var it does not show any boot file.

Also before this i run the command under config t

config t factory default.

sh ver shows

System image file is "disk0:/asa802-k8.bin"

Config file at boot was "startup-config"

now i added the boot system command it shows

ciscoasa# sh bootvar

BOOT variable = disk0:/asa802-k8.bin

Current BOOT variable =

CONFIG_FILE variable =

Current CONFIG_FILE variable =

will reload and let you know how it goes

ciscoasa# copy running-config startup-config

Source filename [running-config]?

Cryptochecksum: 25d50efa 985f7651 2a26592f 16eb1439

1368 bytes copied in 1.610 secs (1368 bytes/sec)

ciscoasa# reload

Hi Jennifer,

I did reboot

ciscoasa#  sh bootvar

BOOT variable =

Current BOOT variable =

CONFIG_FILE variable =

Current CONFIG_FILE variable =

now boot variable command is empty

That symptom could also be caused by a wrong config-register. What does the following command give you?

asa# sh ver | i register

If it is not 0x1, change it to that value:

asa(config)# config-register 0x1
