STP as Standard STP 802.1D should be retired now and Rapid STP, 802.1W, should be set as default on all Cisco switches. It is ok to still learn and test STP on exams. That is my suggestion.

Spanning tree Protocol is a Layer 2 Protocol and it is by default defined in a Layer 2 Switches. The purpose of the Spanning Tree protocol to avoid looping into the network and make sure that the network would not be the dead reason is looping is one of the destructive for any network
BPDU guard is is used as safety net if STP is not configured correctly. IIRC, if a BPDU packet is recieved on a portfast interface, the port will be shutdown (errdisable). This happened to me on one of our access ports that had an esxi server attached to it. This must have been from the virtual switch configured in the ESXi subsystem.
