Core Issue

If a CiscoPro (CPA) router has a non-CPA Cisco IOS  Software image installed, the router will display a Wrong system software for this hardware error message at bootup. The router must be upgraded using a "cookie cutter" image before a standard Cisco IOS Software image may be installed.

Resolution

Issue the show version command to determine if the router is a CPA router, as shown in this command output:

To upgrade the license on the router in order to load a non-CPA version of Cisco IOS Software, perform the following steps:

  1. Download the appropriate cookie upgrade image file from the CiscoPro Router Software Loader (RSL).
  2. Issue the copy tftp flash command and the erase command. Without issuing the erase command, the cookie image will not be the first image on Flash, and it will not run at bootup.
  3. Change the configuration register to 0x2102 by issuing the config-register 0x2102 global configuration command.
  4. Reload the router. If prompted to save changes, answer No. Answering Yes may result in a loss of configuration. The router should reload with a message about the router being upgraded.
  5. Issue the copy tftp flash command for the full Cisco IOS Software image along with the erase command. If the erase command is not issued, the cookie image will run again at reload and may render the router inoperable.
  6. Change the configuration register to 0x2102 by issuing the config-register 0x2102 global configuration command.
  7. Reload the router. If prompted to save changes, answer No. Answering Yes may result in a loss of configuration.

If the upgrade is successful, the router should load with the new Cisco IOS Software image and the cisco CPA2500 will have changed to cisco 2500 in the show version command output.
