Cisco 5921 ESR Integration Guide v3 - March 2015

The Cisco 5921 Embedded Services Router (ESR) is particularly attractive when a manufacturer or an integrator has created a solution that may have required many agency certifications or must fit into a form factor that is not available with our existing embedded hardware platforms such as the Cisco 5915 or the Cisco 5940. One example to consider would be a piece of avionics which requires FAA and other approvals for aircraft weight and balance, power consumption, and heat dissipation. The addition of Cisco Layer 3 routing technology using the Cisco 5921 ESR into such a solution alters none of the mentioned parameters and may easy re-approval steps if any are required.

This guide is for experienced systems designers and system integrators with competent knowledge of Linux and Cisco IOS who are incorporating the Cisco 5921 ESR into their designs.

The Cisco 5921 Embedded Services Router is Cisco IOS compiled as an x86 32-bit Linux application. It is designed to run on a host hardware platform using the Linux kernel 2.6.32 or later.

This is a detailed technical document and it should be considered the starting point for anyone considering the use of the Cisco 5921 ESR as a component in their solution.
