This problem may be caused by the fact that an Early Deployment (ED) release is required in order to support the hardware. ED releases are indicated by a capital letter following the version number in parentheses. For example, the capital T in Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(5)T indicates that it is an ED release.
If the the Cisco IOS Software version were 12.1(5), it would be Limited Deployment (LD) or General Deployment (GD). If the Cisco IOS Software version were 12.1(5a), it still would be LD or GD. If the minimum requirement to support hardware is Cisco IOS Software version 12.1(5)T, but the Cisco IOS Software release installed is 12.1(5) or 12.1(6), the hardware will not be recognized.
When a minimum software requirement for hardware is indicated, the supported software must be in the same software train. For example, Cisco IOS Software version 12.1(5)T is in the 12.1T train, and Cisco IOS Software version 12.1(6) is in the 12.1 train. Therefore, Cisco IOS Software version 12.1(6) is not a higher version than 12.1(5)T because they are in different trains.
When selecting a Cisco IOS Software version, refer to the Software Support for Hardware section of Software Advisor to verify the minimum software requirements for all hardware. Be sure that the software train is the same and that the version number in parentheses is the same or higher than indicated by the Software Advisor. For example, if the minimum software requirement Cisco IOS version is 12.1(5)T, the hardware would not be supported in Cisco IOS Software version 12.1(3)T. However, it would be supported in Cisco IOS Software version 12.1(11)T. The hardware would not be supported in Cisco IOS Software version 12.1(11) because version 12.1(11) is not a T train code.
The train requirement does not carry over between major releases. For example, if Cisco IOS Software version 12.1(5)T is a requirement in the 12.1 major release, the 12.2 major release does not necessarily require the T train to support the same hardware.
