The %C4K_IOSMODPORTMAN-4-TEMPHIGH:error message is received on a Cisco Catalyst 4000 series switch

Core issue

This error message indicates that the chassis temperature is above the threshold. If the temperature goes above a critical threshold, another message is logged. The system also shuts down to prevent damage to the hardware.

To resolve this issue, perform these steps:

  1. Inspect the chassis to determine why the temperature has risen.

  2. Inspect to see whether the fan failed with these steps:
    1. If the LED is off and the rest of the system functions, the fan tray is not powered or is not seated correctly on the backplane.
    2. If the LED is green, the fans are functional. There could be conditions that impair fan performance, but they are minimal in impact.
    3. If the LED is red, one or more fans failed.

For more information on how to fix this problem, refer to the Troubleshooting the Fan Assembly section of Troubleshooting the Installation.
